State Tournament Recaps

2020 OHSAA Golf State Tournament Recaps

Division I Boys
Trailing by two strokes entering the final round, Akron Archbishop Hoban completed a state-record performance to win its first OHSAA Division I golf state championship Saturday on the OSU Scarlet Course. The Knights shot a 304-302-606 (+38) to top runner-up Cleveland St. Ignatius 302-307-609 (+41) by three shots.

The 606 team score breaks the Division I Scarlet Course record of 607 set by Dublin Jerome in 2017 and 2019. Jerome finished fourth overall Saturday after winning the last three state championships.

Freshman Jack Vojtko led Hoban with a 75-72-147 (+5) that tied for third overall. Junior teammate Solomon Petrie tied for fifth overall with a 74-76-150 (+8), while senior Josh Wright shot a 79-74-153 (+11) and sophomore Nolan Haynes shot a 78-80-158 (+16).

Springboro senior Jordan Gilkison fired a 72-71-143 (+1) to earn medalist honors and come within one shot of the OHSAA Division I state tournament record on Scarlet.

Division II Boys
Gahanna Columbus Academy turned in a record-breaking performance on the OSU Scarlet Course to claim its fourth-consecutive and 11th overall OHSAA Division II boys golf state championship. The Vikings set the Division II Scarlet Course single-round record Friday with a 300, and then tied the overall Division II team score on Scarlet of 615, initially set by Columbus Bishop Watterson in 1973 and 1974.

The 11 state golf titles rank second in OHSAA history behind the 17 won by Upper Arlington. The Vikings (300-315-615) topped runner-up Kettering Archbishop Alter by 14 shots (315-314-629).

Academy sophomore Stephen Ma earned medalist honors with a 71-73-144 (+2). His teammates leading the Vikings to the state title included junior Russell Ahmed 78-77-155 (+13), junior Aditya Reddy 72-84-156 (+14) and junior Jake Stouffer 76-86-162 (+20).

Division III Boys
With its top four players all finishing in the Top 12, Canton Central Catholic took home its fourth OHSAA golf state title after posting a 300-315-615 at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury, topping state runner-up Berlin Hiland 313-313-626 by 11 strokes.

Central Catholic also won golf state titles in 1984, 1987 and 2014. The Crusaders were led by senior Alex Milavickas, who posted a 72-79-151 (+7) to finish seventh overall. Junior Gavin Shamblen shot a 75-78-153 (+9), senior Charlie Belden shot a 78-77-155 (+11) and senior Kyle Freudeman shot a 75-81-156 (+12).

Berlin Hiland junior Brookston Hummel earned medalist honors with a two-over-par 72-74-146. He finished eighth overall in 2019 and led the Hawks to a state title on the OSU Scarlet Course.

Division I Girls
New Albany continued it domination in the Division I girls golf state tournament, winning its third state title in a row Saturday on the OSU Gray Course. The Eagles shot 293-293-586 (+26) to run away from runner-up Mason 316-311-627 (+67) by 41 strokes.

Pacing four New Albany players in the Top 10, senior Madison Spiess took home medalist honors with a 71-70-141 (+1). She finished in the Top 5 at the state tournament each of the last four years. Junior Anna Ritter, who was last year’s medalist, finished fifth with a 75-74-149 +9). Junior Kary Hollenbaugh tied for sixth with an 80-71-151 (+11) and freshman Emerson Purcell tied for 10th with a 71-81-152 (+12).

Division II Girls
Breaking two of its own OHSAA Division II state tournament records on the OSU Gray Course, Lima Central Catholic won its third-consecutive state title Saturday by 53 strokes over runner-up Zoarville Tuscarawas Valley. The Thunderbirds’ record-setting weekend topped their previous state-best performance in 2019 for both a single round (310 Friday) and overall (630).

LCC had set records in 2019 for best single-round (318) and overall (647), but its 2020 squad of the Mulcahy sisters – seniors Mary Kelly and Erin and sophomore Bridget – along with juniors Emma Mayers and Carlie VanMeter, rewrote the record book again. Mary Kelly led the way with a 147 (+7), while Erin shot a 149 (+9), Emma shot a 165 (+25) and Bridget shot a 169 (+29).

Shaker Heights Laurel senior Jami Morris captured individual medalist honors with a two-under-par 138. Her 68 on Friday was one shot away from tying the single-round Gray Course record of 67, set three times. Jami’s 138 is the sixth time that a Division II state tournament score has been registered a -2 or better.
