Muscaro to Earn Induction into National High School
Hall of
Fame
Past
commissioner ushered in changes to tournaments, new programs
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Clair Muscaro, former Ohio High
School Athletic Association commissioner, has been selected for
induction into the National High School Hall of Fame.
Muscaro is one of two administrators
amongst a class of 12 individuals to be honored July 1 in Chicago by
the National Federation of State High School Associations.
He
took over as the OHSAA commissioner in 1990 and served until 2004.
Notably, he helped increase the amount of football divisions from
five to six, while the football playoffs also expanded from 96 teams
to 192 teams during his time as commissioner.
Furthermore, Muscaro eliminated
postseason tournament entry fees and helped establish the OHSAA
Foundation, which promotes leadership and service activities and
provides scholarships for student-athletes.
After serving as the principal at
Peninsula Woodridge for 17 years, he worked as an assistant
commissioner with the OHSAA for nearly six years before being named
the association’s eighth commissioner in 1990. His tenure as
commissioner was the second-longest, with only the first
commissioner, H.R. Townsend (1925-44), having served longer.
The National High School Hall of Fame
was started in 1982 by the NFHS to honor high school athletes,
coaches, contest officials, administrators, fine arts
coaches/directors and others for their extraordinary achievements
and accomplishments in high school sports and activity programs.
This year's class increases the number in the Hall of Fame to 362,
and this year's event will be the 27th induction ceremony.
The 12 individuals were chosen after a two-level selection process
involving a screening committee composed of active high school state
association administrators, coaches and officials, and a final
selection committee composed of coaches, former athletes, state
association officials, media representatives and educational
leaders. Nominations were made through NFHS member associations.
