Division IV: Senior quarterback Ben Mauk threw four touchdown passes and ran for three more to lead ninth-ranked Kenton (13-1) to a 45-13 win over unranked West Portsmouth Portsmouth West. It was the second straight title for the Wildcats. Mauk, Ohio’s Mr. Football, passed for 300 yards and rushed for 133 more. He tied his own Division IV state finals record with four touchdown passes, and he tied the state finals record for all divisions by accounting for seven TDs (St. Henry quarterback Ryan Uhlenhake threw for six and ran for one in the 1996 Division VI final). Mauk, operating the Wildcats’ five-receiver, no-back formation, ended the season with 6,528 passing yards and 76 TDs (both state records), while his career numbers of 17,523 passing yards and 179 scores not only set Ohio records but national standards as well. Junior D.J. Underwood caught six passes for 138 yards and senior Jared Bostelman tied the Division IV finals record with three scoring receptions. Portsmouth West, making its first state finals appearance, was held to 79 total yards. The penalty-marred game saw the two teams combine for 26 penalties for 231 yards.
