and Delta win fourth-straight team wrestling state championships, Lakewood
St. Edward captures second state title
COLUMBUS, Ohio � St.
Paris Graham Local and Delta won their fourth-straight state wrestling dual
team tournament championships and Lakewood St. Edward captured its second
team wrestling state title at the 2016 OHSAA state wrestling dual team
tournament at St. John Arena on Sunday. The tournament celebrated its fourth
year, as 24 teams across three divisions competed.
St. Edward defeated Elyria
49-22 to win the Division I state title. The victory earned St. Edward its
second team wrestling state championship and its first since 2013. When
combined with the team titles awarded at the individual tournament, St.
Edward now claims 30 wrestling state championships overall, most among OHSAA
member schools. St. Edward defeated Cincinnati Elder 57-9 in the
quarterfinals and Massillon Perry 49-10 in the semifinals to advance to the
state championship match. Elyria was making its first state final appearance
in its second year qualifying for the tournament.
In Division II, Graham
captured its fourth-straight team wrestling state championship and 18th
wrestling state title overall by defeating Wauseon in the state final match,
62-4. Graham advanced through a 69-6 quarterfinal victory over New Lexington
and a 57-6 semifinal victory against Mentor Lake Catholic. At the individual
state tournament, Graham has won the Division II team title every year since
2001. Wauseon finishes as state runner-up in its first appearance at the
tournament.
Delta defeated
Mechanicsburg 41-21 in the Division III state final match to earn its
fourth-consecutive team wrestling state championship and its seventh
wrestling state title overall. Delta advanced by way of a 54-19 quarterfinal
victory vs. Shadyside and a 40-19 victory against Rootstown in the
semifinals. Mechanicsburg was making its second appearance in the state
wrestling dual team tournament and finishes as state runner-up for the first
time.
Total state tournament
attendance was 3,390, a record-high for the tournament.
