OHSAA Board of Directors Meeting Highlights

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors held its regularly scheduled January meeting Thursday morning at the OHSAA office. The following are highlights from the meeting. Complete meeting minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org.

OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass also updated the Board on what many schools are doing this weekend as part of the OHSAA’s statewide Military Appreciation Night.

- The Board reviewed the list of Ohio coaches who were recently honored by the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) for the 2017-18 school year. Thirteen Ohioans were named Coach of the Year for Section 2 (Mideast eight state area) and four of those coaches were named the NFHS National Coach of the Year for 2017-18, including East Canton’s Lee Sternberg in boys cross country, Columbus Academy’s Anne Horton in field hockey, Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Amy Dunlap in girls soccer and Gahanna Lincoln’s Roger Whittaker in girls track and field. - By a 9-0 vote, the Board approved additional referendum items that OHSAA member schools will vote on during the annual referendum voting period in May. The approved items include two constitution proposals, five bylaw proposals and two bylaw proposals specifically for 7th and 8th grade schools. Each member school principal is responsible to vote on behalf of the school and voting will be conducted electronically for the first time in 2019. - By a 9-0 vote, the Board approved a recommendation from the OHSAA staff to change the start date for the 2019-20 wrestling season competition to be Thursday, December 5, 2019 rather than the initial published start date of Friday, December 6.
- Since the Board’s last meeting, 27 member schools were penalized for committing infractions of OHSAA bylaws or sports regulations. The list of infractions and penalties is always included in the complete meeting minutes, but media members may request the list in advance from Tim Stried, OHSAA Director of Communications, at [email protected].
- The Board reviewed the attendance and financial reports for the fall tournaments in field hockey, golf, girls tennis and soccer. The field hockey state tournament drew 1,751 fans and the entire tournament, including the district qualifying tournaments, results in proceeds of $10,396. The golf state tournaments drew 3,767 fans and resulted in a loss of $44,858. The girls tennis state tournament drew 1,016 fans and resulted in a loss of $2,118. The soccer state semifinals and championship games drew 16,746 fans and resulted in proceeds of $46,431.
- The volleyball, cross country and football postseason financial reports are expected to be presented at the February Board meeting.
- The Board approved the sports manuals and tournament regulations for the OHSAA’s spring sports. The manuals and regulations will be posted on each of the spring sport pages at OHSAA.org.
