The purpose of this memo is to inform school administrators that the OHSAA has received word that there has been no change in the way that credit is awarded for physical education in Ohio schools.
It has come to our attention, via the State Department of Education, that some schools are assigning a full Carnegie unit of credit to physical education courses that meet for 120 clock hours. According to current standards, those physical education courses that meet for 120 hours shall receive ½ Carnegie unit of credit. Likewise, those courses that meet for 60 hours, whether in a yearlong or semester format, shall be awarded ¼ Carnegie unit of credit.
Absent any change from Ohio’s General Assembly, no school has the authority to change this standard. Please check the schedules of all student-athletes to insure that they are enrolled in at least five one-credit courses or the equivalent during this grading period and were enrolled in at least five one-credit courses or the equivalent in the preceding grading period of this new school year.
