OHSAA Adds Kelly Kovach Schoenly to Sports Administration Team
Schoenly brings 29 years of Division I college experience
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio High School Athletic Association Executive Director Doug Ute has announced that Kelly Kovach Schoenly will join the OHSAA staff as a sport administrator. Schoenly comes to the OHSAA after coaching college softball for the last 29 years, including the last 12 as the head coach at The Ohio State University.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., and an All-American pitcher at the University of Michigan, Schoenly served as an assistant coach at both Michigan and Penn State before taking over as the head coach at Miami University from 2006-12 and then Ohio State for 12 seasons, from the 2013 through 2024 seasons.
“We are very excited to add Kelly to the OHSAA staff and have her years of experience at the college level benefit schools and student-athletes in Ohio,” Ute said. “Not only did she win on the softball field, but she also embraced the administrative side of athletics, hosting umpire clinics, and working with athletic department regulations and compliance. All those strengths make her a perfect fit to join our team.”
Schoenly's sport assignments for the OHSAA will be determined in the coming weeks.
“I’m a firm believer in the lessons that high school sports teach,” Schoenly said. “My experience in high school was one that changed my life and opened up so many doors for me. Now, my goal will be to help provide those same experiences to kids all throughout Ohio. Thank you to Doug Ute for the opportunity to join the OHSAA family. Not only did Schoenly collect 555 career wins at the Division I college level, she had a 100 percent compliant record with the NCAA. As a player, Kelly was a two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, two-time Academic All-American, and helped lead Michigan to its first Women’s College World Series appearance. In high school, Kelly earned 11 letters in basketball, softball and volleyball at Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh and was a two-time volleyball state champion. She was all-state in volleyball and softball and was a WPIAL Hall of Fame inductee.
