State Championship Game Recaps

Division IV State Championship
Fort Loramie 42, Waterford 29
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Avery Brandewie scored 17 points to lead Fort Loramie to a 42-29 win over Waterford in the 2024 Division IV state championship game at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Fort Loramie won its fourth state title, all since 2013. Waterford, in its seventh state tournament since 2015, finished runner-up for the third time to go with state titles in 2016 and 2022.
 
Fort Loramie becomes the 12th school with at least four OHSAA girls basketball state championships.
 
Fort Loramie (28-2) never trailed in the contest, but the game was tied 11-11 before Fort Loramie scored the final nine points of the first half. Eight of those points came off Waterford turnovers; 16 of Fort Loramie’s 20 first-half points came off 14 Waterford turnovers. 
 
Fort Loramie’s lead grew to as many as 16 points in the third quarter, but Waterford (24-4) drew within nine before Brandewie banked in a long three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer.
 
Brandewie scored 10 of her team’s first 13 points and shot 8 of 16 from the floor. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Summer Hoying added eight points and five assists, and six other players scored for Fort Loramie.
 
Kendall Sury scored Waterford’s first eight points and finished with a game-high 19. She made 6 of 8 shots from the floor and all seven of her free throw attempts.
 
The schools were meeting in the state tournament for the second time. Fort Loramie defeated Waterford, 55-48, in the 2015 Division IV state championship game.

Division III State Championship
Columbus Africentric Early College 58, Ottawa-Glandorf 47
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Columbus Africentric Early College won its second consecutive Division III state title, defeating Ottawa-Glandorf, 58-47, at University of Dayton Arena.
 
The state championship was Africentric’s ninth overall, most in OHSAA girls basketball history. All nine championships have come since 2007.
 
Africentric’s largest lead of the first half was 11 points, 21-10, after Ashtan Winfrey scored with 4:34 left in the second quarter. Ottawa-Glandorf chipped away at the lead and drew within two points twice, the final time when Karsyn Erford’s bucket pulled O-G within 29-27 with 3:42 left in the third quarter. 
 
Africentric (28-2) immediately answered with a 13-3 run—in which four different players scored—and stretched its lead back to 12 points, 42-30, with 1:40 left in the third quarter. From there, Ottawa-Glandorf would get no closer than six points.
 
Both teams made 21 shots from the floor, but Africentric was 3 of 6 from three while Ottawa-Glandorf was 0 for 4. Africentric shot 13 of 14 from the foul line, compared to 5 of 12 for O-G, and made 8 of 9 foul shots in the second half.
 
Africentric also had a 34-25 edge in rebounds and score 11 second-chance points.
 
Four different players scored at least 10 points for Africentric. Samairah Thompson had 12 points and six rebounds, while Natiah Nelson finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Kamryn Grant posted a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Bowers also hit double figures with 10 points.
 
Ottawa-Glandorf (26-3) was led by Erford’s 18 points. Carlie Brinkman was also in double figures with 10 points.

Division II State Championship
Cincinnati Purcell Marian 79, Shaker Heights Laurel 52
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Cincinnati Purcell Marian claimed its third consecutive state championship, downing Shaker Heights Laurel, 79-52, in the Division II state championship game at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Purcell Marian has won the last two Division II state titles after winning the Division III title in 2022 and is the first school to win three straight girls basketball state titles since Kettering Archbishop Alter won the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Division II titles.
 
Purcell Marian junior Dee Alexander became the state tournament’s all-time leading scorer in the win. Alexander, winner of the last two Ohio Ms. Basketball awards, has scored 134 points in her three appearances at the state tournament. Beth Ostendorf (Urbana 1992-93, Pickerington 1994-95) was the previous record holder with 122 career state tournament points.
 
Purcell Marian (29-1) never trailed, outscoring Laurel 12-2 over the final 4:48 of the first quarter to build a 20-10 lead that grew to 18 points at halftime.
 
Alexander and Ky’Aira Miller both scored 18 points for Purcell Marian. Samaya Wilkins scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Jayda Mosley scored eight points and handed out nine assists. Purcell Marian made 30 of 65 shots from the floor and 12 of 18 at the foul line, and its 79 points were the most in Division II state championship game history.
 
Saniyah Hall had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Laurel (19-11), giving her 47 points and 39 rebounds combined in Laurel’s two state tournament games. Tristan Williams added 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
Laurel, with a roster featuring 11 freshmen and sophomores and just one senior, was making its second appearance at the state tournament.

Division I State Championship
Olmsted Falls 52, Springboro 45
 
DAYTON, Ohio - One year after finishing runner-up, Olmsted Falls returned the Division I state championship game and defeated Springboro, 52-45, to win its first girls basketball state title in school history.
 
Danielle Cameron scored 19 points to lead an Olmsted Falls offense that made a Division I championship game record 10 three-pointers.
 
Springboro jumped to an early 9-2 lead, but Olmsted Falls (26-3) reeled off a 17-4 run over a span of six minutes that gave it a 19-13 lead with 3:41 left in the first half. The lead was three points, 20-17, at halftime.
 
Springboro opened the second half on 7-1 run to take a a 24-21 lead less than two minutes into the frame, but Olmsted Falls immediately responded with its own 11-2 burst, capped by a corner 3 from freshman Grace Largent, to build a 32-26 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter.
 
Springboro (24-6) drew within two points three times, but Olmsted Falls never relinquished the lead and made 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
 
Ten of Olmsted Falls’ 14 made field goals were three-pointers, and the Bulldogs were 14 of 24 at the foul line for the game. Six different players made a three-pointer for Olmsted Falls.
 
Bryn Martin scored 22 points to lead Springboro. Aniya Trent was also in double figures with 12.
 
Both schools were making their second appearance at the state tournament. Springboro also finished runner-up in its last appearance in 1978.
 

State Semifinal Recaps

Division IV Semifinal #1
Waterford 41, Loudonville 32
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Kendall Sury scored a game-high 17 points and Avery Wagner had a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead Waterford to a 41-32 win over Loudonville in the first Division IV state semifinal at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Waterford (24-3) advances to the state championship game for the fifth time in school history. Loudonville, making its second appearance at the state tournament and first since 1992, closes its season at 26-3.
 
Sury scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half as Waterford built a 23-11 halftime lead. The lead grew to as many as 18 points midway through the third quarter, and Loudonville drew only as close as seven points in the closing minutes. Waterford never trailed after Wagner made a pair of free throws to give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead three minutes into the contest. 
 
Corri Vermilya had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Loudonville. Sophia Spangler joined her in double figures with 11 points.

Division IV Semifinal #2
Fort Loramie 50, Convoy Crestview 41
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Avery Brandewie scored 18 second-half points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, to rally Fort Loramie past Convoy Crestview, 50-41, in the second Division IV state semifinal.
 
Crestview led 33-29 entering the fourth quarter, but Fort Loramie opened the final period on a 10-0 run—Brandewie scored the first eight points of the run—and outscored Crestview 21-8 over the final eight minutes. 
 
Brandewie finished with 22 points. She made 6 of 7 shots from the field and 10 of 12 at the foul line. She also had six rebounds and three assists.
 
Cali Gregory made four three-pointers and led Crestview with 22 points and six rebounds.
 
Fort Loramie (27-2) advances to the state championship game for the sixth time in school history. Crestview, after making its sixth appearance at the state tournament, closes its season at 26-3.

Division III Semifinal #1
Columbus Africentric Early College 62, LaGrange Keystone 35
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Columbus Africentric Early College defeated LaGrange Keystone, 62-35, in the first of two Division III state semifinals at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Africentric (27-2) advances to Saturday’s Division III state championship game. The Nubians will be making their 11th appearance in a state final, tied with Berlin Hiland for the most in OHSAA girls basketball history.
 
Africentric’s Kamryn Grant led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. She also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Three others were in double figures: Jeniya Bowers with 11 and Natiah Nelson and Samairah Thompson with 10 apiece.
 
Keystone (28-1), making its first appearance in the state tournament, was led by Jessica Forthofer’s 18 points.
 
Africentric outscored Keystone 38-13 over the middle two quarters after leading 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Division III Semifinal #2
Ottawa-Glandorf 47, Portsmouth 40
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Ottawa-Glandorf is heading to its fourth girls basketball state championship game after defeating Portsmouth, 47-40, in a Division III semifinal at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Ottawa-Glandorf (26-2) led 10-9 after one quarter, but scored the first 12 points of the second stanza and led 22-13 at halftime. Portsmouth drew within five during a high-tempo fourth quarter, but Ottawa-Glandorf used a 39-23 rebounding edge to its advantage and scored 30 points in the paint.
 
Alivia Grothause and Katie Kaufman both scored 10 points to lead a balanced Ottawa-Glandorf scoring effort. Carlie Brinkman scored nine points, Karsyn Erford had eight and Kaitlyn Kimmet scored seven.
 
Portsmouth (22-6), making its first appearance at the state tournament, was led by Sienna Allen’s 12 points. Daysha Reid added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Division II Semifinal #1
Shaker Heights Laurel 53, Proctorville Fairland 52 
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Jordyn Meyer’s layup with five seconds remaining lifted Shaker Heights Laurel to a 53-52 win over Proctorville Fairland in the first Division II state semifinal at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Laurel (19-10) advances to the state championship game for the first time in school history, while Fairland finishes 26-2 after making its fourth appearance at the state tournament.
 
The game was tied eight different times and saw 10 lead changes. Fairland led by as many as eight points, 27-19, just before halftime, but Laurel opened the second half with an 11-2 run and led by three, 32-29, two minutes into the third period. Neither team led by more than five points in the second half, and the fourth quarter was played within a three-point margin.
 
The teams traded points on the game’s last five possessions, all in the final 62 seconds. Fairland’s Bree Allen tied the game at 49 with a three-pointer with 1:02 left, and Nyla Edwards gave Laurel a 51-49 lead with 37 seconds remaining.
 
Out of a timeout, Fairland’s Addison Godby scored in the paint to even the score at 51 with 21 seconds left, but Meyer’s layup with five seconds remaining swung the lead back to Laurel. Fairland pushed the ball up the floor after Meyer’s basket and drew a foul with 0.2 seconds remaining, but split the two free throws for the final margin.
 
Saniyah Hall played all 32 minutes for Laurel and tallied 26 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Meyer also finished in double figures with 14 points.
 
Four players finished with 11 points for Fairland: Godby, Kamryn Barnitz, Bailey Russell and Kylee Bruce. Allen scored six points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Division II Semifinal #2
Cincinnati Purcell Marian 67, Copley 29
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Cincinnati Purcell Marian will play in its third consecutive state championship game after defeating Copley, 67-29, in the second Division II state semifinal at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Purcell Marian never trailed in the contest and used an 18-0 run in the second quarter to pull away.
 
Dee Alexander, named Ohio’s Ms. Basketball for the second straight year earlier in the week, led Purcell Marian with 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting. She added five rebounds and four assists.
 
Jayda Mosley (12 points) and Trinity Small (nine points) both made three three-pointers for Purcell Marian, and in all eight different players scored for the Cavaliers.
 
Kami Ayoup scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting for Copley.
 
Purcell Marian (28-1) is the defending Division II state champion after winning the Division III state title in 2022. Copley (25-4) was making its second appearance at the state tournament and first since 2006.

Division I Semifinal #1
Olmsted Falls 62, Rocky River Magnificat 38
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Olmsted Falls booked a return trip to the Division I state championship game with a 62-38 win over Rocky River Magnificat in the first Division I state semifinal.
 
Olmsted Falls, the 2023 Division I runner-up, made 10 of 19 three-pointers for the game and outscored Magnificat 17-4 in the third quarter to pull away. Defensively, Olmsted Falls forced 18 turnovers and scored 24 points off those turnovers.
 
Danielle Cameron scored 19 points to lead Olmsted Falls. She also collected eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jesse Simon added 15 points and Maddie Cerovac scored 10 points for Olmsted Falls.
 
Reese Roggenburk led Magnificat with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Olmsted Falls (25-3), playing in its second state tournament, will also play in its second state championship game. Magnificat finishes its season 21-7 after making its sixth trip to the state tournament.

Division I Semifinal #2
Springboro 63, Pickerington Central 54
 
DAYTON, Ohio - Bryn Martin scored a Division I state tournament record 38 points to lead Springboro to a 63-54 win over Pickerington Central in the second Division I state semifinal at University of Dayton Arena.
 
Springboro (24-5) advances to the state championship game for the second time in school history and first time since 1978. Pickerington Central finishes 25-4 overall after making its 15th appearance at the state tournament.
 
Martin shot 11 of 23 from the floor and 13 of 14 at the foul line. She scored 17 points in the first half as Springboro built a 27-19 halftime lead, then scored 13 of Springboro’s 17 third-quarter points. Martin also collected eight rebounds and four steals.
 
Springboro never trailed after a 15-2 run turned an early 13-7 deficit into a 22-15 lead midway through the second quarter.
 
Rylee Bess scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures for Pickerington Central. Zoe Coleman and Blossom Wallace both finished with 11 points.
 
Martin broke both the Division I semifinal scoring record (32 points - Michelle White, Hudson, 2003) and the Division I tournament record (34 points - Jodi Roth, Shelby, 1983). Martin is tied with Jenna Burdette (Reedsville Eastern, 2014) and Kelly Downs (Richmond Dale Southeastern, 1986) for the third highest single game total in any division in state tournament history; Lynn Bihn (Fort Recovery) holds the record with 43 points in the 1991 Division IV state final.
