Upper Arlington Secures State Championship Over Powell Olentangy Liberty
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Upper Arlington girls lacrosse team (21-3) took home its fourth OHSAA Division I state championship and its 10th overall with a 14-10 victory against Powell Olentangy Liberty (21-3) at Historic Crew Stadium on Saturday. Upper Arlington senior Kampbell Stone scored an OHSAA state record six goals, five of which came in the first 15 minutes of play.
Upper Arlington scored the first goal 26 seconds into the game but saw an early 4-1 lead erased by three consecutive Liberty goals, the last coming off the stick of sophomore Madeline Pohmer, who scored with 13:59 left in the first half.
Upper Arlington senior Lilly Stelzer scored four goals in the contest, which ties former Golden Bear Leo Caine for third all-time.
Junior goalie Abby Black made three saves and faced 13 shots on goal for the Golden Bears, and junior goalie Alayna Bogner made four saves on 18 shots on goal for the Patriots.
Senior Makena Harrington scored three times for the Patriots and Sophomore Corinna Hilmas scored twice.
Liberty was making its first ever state tournament appearance.
Division II
Bishop Watterson Overcomes Three Goal Deficit to Claim First State Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus Bishop Watterson (19-3) scored the last five goals of the game to defeat Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown (17-6) 10-8 in the OHSAA Division II girls lacrosse state championship on Saturday at Historic Crew Stadium.
Down three goals with just under 20 minutes to play, the Eagles from Bishop Watterson climbed back to stun the two-time state champion Blazers from Hathaway Brown.
Hathaway Brown scored early in the second half to go up 8-5, but it would be the last time they would score in the game. Bishop Watterson senior Katie Bettendorf scored her third goal with 9:43 remaining to even the game at eight a piece before junior Sophia Monesi netted her second goal to take the lead. Junior Avery McClain provided insurance for the Eagles, scoring with 3:32 remaining. Senior Meg Newcomb scored twice in the winning effort.
Hathaway Brown got on the board first with three goals in the opening five minutes. Bishop Watterson answered with a few goals of its own, but senior Blazer Paige Perry scored with no time remaining in the first half to extend the lead to 7-5 at the break.
Senior Miranda Pace led the scoring for Hathaway Brown with three goals and sophomore Emily Morgan added two goals and two assists.
Junior Allie Beros stopped four shots in net for the Blazers and junior Amelia Brown turned away five shots for the Eagles.
