State Tournament Recaps

Division II
LaGrange Keystone Wins Fourth State Title, Tops Beloit West Branch
AKRON, Ohio – No. 1 LaGrange Keystone topped unranked Beloit West Branch 3-2, after 12 innings of play Saturday in the OHSAA Div. II state championship game at Firestone Stadium.
 
Keystone scored the first two runs of the game in the sixth inning when senior Brooke Piazza singled to center field allowing freshman Madi Herrington and senior Val Broschk to score.
 
West Branch answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh after sophomore Paige Alazaus doubled to left field, allowing junior Delaney Rito and senior Kylie Coffelt to score, forcing the game into extra innings.
 
The two teams fought it out until the 12th inning when Keystone sophomore Marlie McNulty had a hit to right field, sending Broschk home.
 
The Wildcats pitcher, junior Sydney Campbell, completed 12 innings with three strikeouts.
 
West Branch was making its first appearance in school history to the state tournament.
 
Division I
Massillon Perry Defeats West Chester Lakota West, 11-1
AKRON, Ohio – Massillon Perry toped West Chester Lakota West, 11-1, Saturday in the OHSAA Div. I state championship game at Firestone Stadium.
 
Freshman Missy Holzopfel led the Panthers with two runs and two RBIs, while senior Sunshine Armstrong had four RBIs. The Panthers scored six runs by the third inning.
 
The Panthers pitcher, junior Payton Gotshall, had seven strikeouts and only allowed four hits.
 
Lakota West made its fourth state tournament appearance.
 
Perry was making its fifth state tournament appearance and took home its first state title since 2010.
 
Division IV
Jeromesville Hillsdale Tops Strasburg-Franklin 5-0 for Seventh Title
AKRON, Ohio – In a match-up of two tradition-rich programs, No. 1-ranked Jeromesville Hillsdale shut out third-ranked Strasburg-Franklin, 5-0, Saturday in the OHSAA Div. IV state championship game at Firestone Stadium to claim its seventh state title.
 
Senior Sydney Long hit a two-run homerun in the first inning and pitched a one-hit shutout with four strikeouts. Hillsdale (27-2) added three runs in the fifth, which included an RBI triple by freshman Josie Rowland.
 
Hillsdale was making its 15th appearance in the state tournament and adds the championship to previous titles won in 2010, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1994 and 1979.
 
Rowland had three hits to pace Hillsdale, while junior Sophie Goon added two.
 
Strasburg-Franklin (23-6) was making its 16th appearance in the state tournament.
 
 
Division III
Warren Champion Takes Home Eighth Title with 9-4 Win Over Cardington-Lincoln
AKRON, Ohio – No. 1 Warren Champion defeated No. 4 Cardington-Lincoln, 9-4, Saturday in the OHSAA Div. III state championship game at Firestone Stadium to claim its eighth state title.
 
Freshman Emma Gumont led the Flashes with two runs and four RBIs.
 
Cardington (26-4) answered with a homerun by sophomore Casey Bertke in the sixth inning. The Pirates scored two additional runs in the seventh.
 
Flashes pitcher, sophomore Allison Smith, pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.
 
Champion was making its second consecutive state tournament appearance and 10th overall. The Flashes finished on top with an undefeated record of 31-0.
 
Cardington (26-4) made its second state appearance and took back state runner-up for the first time in school history.
