Girls Division I
Upper Arlington Claims Its 13th Swimming Title in School History
CANTON, Ohio – The Upper Arlington girls swimming team won its 13th state title in school history at the 2024 OHSAA Swimming State Tournament on Saturday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Upper Arlington compiled 313 points, which was 106 points better than state runner-up Mason (207)
Upper Arlington Swimmers won four events and had a total of six top 3 finishes. In the final event for girls, Upper Arlington seniors McCall Freiburger, Blaine Huddleston, Lizzie Oliphant, and freshman Riley Hollingsworth put their stamp on the state title by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.31.
Mason came in second place in six different events. In the 200-yard medley relay, seniors Addison Soehnlen and Kaitlyn Weitz along with junior Julia Gregory and sophomore Dana Fairbanks finished just 0:00.63 behind first place Upper Arlington (1:42.82). Sophomore Isabella Teply was the runner up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.62) behind Dublin Jerome junior Milly Leonard (1:49.87). Teply also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.21) behind Leonard again (4:52.77). Additionally, Teply was apart of both the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays where Mason placed second behind Upper Arlington in each.
Upper Arlington had two top 3 placements in the 50-yard freestyle with junior Hayden Hollingsworth (22.69) placing first and senior McCall Freiburger (23.31) placing third. Dublin Jerome junior Olivia Matson came in second with a time of 23.05.
Kings senior Faith Rudowski placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.35 followed up by Dublin Jerome junior Olivia Matson (50.77) Upper Arlington captured the rest of the top 5 with seniors McCall Freiburger (3rd , 50.81), Lizzie Oliphant (4th , 51.06), and Blaine Huddleston (5th , 51.77)
The 100-yard backstroke finished with another Kings swimmer, sophomore Maya Schweikert (54.79) placing first. Avon senior Alex Downing (54.88) and Hilliard Bradley freshman Addison Daugherty rounded out the top 3 with a time of 55.51. The 100-yard breaststroke was won by Hilliard Darby sophomore Alexis Peltcs (1:02.73) with Walnut Hills sophomore Quinn Schureck (1:02.92) placing second and Westerville North senior Madelyn Bosler (1:03.86).
Avon Lake senior Isabella Pfeil won the 1-meter diving after scoring 454.35 points, Magnificat senior Makenna Mincey was the runner-up after scoring 438.90 points, and Olentangy Orange senior Augusta Ness finished in third with 435.05 points.
Dublin Coffman senior Emily Brown set two new OHSAA state records, the 200 Yard individual medley (1:57.27) and the 100 Yard butterfly (52.69) Emily now owns three state records with another being claimed during the 200 Yard freestyle event (1:45.88) at the 2023 OHSAA Swimming State Tournament. For her efforts, Emily was awarded the Girls Division I Performer of the Meet.
Boys Division I
Cincinnati St. Xavier Claims Back-to-Back State Swimming Titles, 44th in School History
CANTON, Ohio – Cincinnati St. Xavier won their second consecutive, and 44th total, OHSAA Swimming State Championship on Saturday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Cincinnati St. Xavier won five of the events and placed in the top 3 ten total times. Their dominance led to a total of 302 points with the runner-up, Upper Arlington, earning 229 points.
In the 200-yard medley relay St. Xavier’s freshman Tucker Charles, senior Max Ward, and juniors Laeger Ellerman and Liam Bien placed 2nd (1:30.52) behind St. Charles’ (1:29.53) sophomores Austin Carpenter and Jake Lloyd, and juniors Wyatt Julian and Andrew Zarick. Upper Arlington’s sophomore Oliver Hulse, junior Caden Blamer, and seniors Gabe Miller and Andrew Rucker placed 3rd with a time of 1:30.78. St. Charles’ Carpenter (54.31) barely edged out St. Xaviers’ Ellerman (54.38) and won the 100-yard breaststroke.
St. Xavier had senior Thackston McMullan (1:36.13) and sophomore Chase Grisi (1:39.36) place 1st and 3rd in the 200-yard freestyle. St. Charles sophomore Austin Carpenter (1:36.21) was the runner-up.
The 200-yard individual medley, Sidney senior Jarrett Payne placed first with a time of 1:48.77. Following him was Jackson senior Luke Vickers (1:50.54) and Olentangy Orange senior Brady Farren (1:51.44). Payne also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.86.
St. Charles sophomore Jake Lloyd took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.28. Ignatius senior Joshua Toothman was the runner-up with a time of 20.34 and Milford freshman Brady Campbell rounded out the top 3 after posting a time of 20.50.
St. Xavier senior Max Ward took 1st place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.33. Jackson had another swimmer take runner-up in an event after senior Ezra Herring finished with a time of 49.33. Placing third was Olentangy Liberty junior Michael Gaier (49.71)
At the 100-yard freestyle, St. Xavier senior Thackston McMullan (43.67) and junior Jaeger Ellerman (45.01) placed 1st and 2 nd with Ignatius senior Joshua Toothman (45.02) coming in 3rd .
Beavercreek senior Caleb Manning recorded a 4:30.12 for the 500-yard freestyle with Upper Arlington senior Reid Caswell earning runner-up after a 4:32.36 time. St. Xavier senior Alex Ingram placed 3rd with a time of 4:36.05.
St. Xavier seniors McMullan, Ward, and Ingram along with sophomore Chase Grisi won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:21.30. St. Charles placed 2 nd after sophomores Austin Carpenter, Jake Lloyd, and Brad King with junior Andrew Zarick who all recorded a time of 1:21.30. Upper Arlington rounded off the top 3 after senior swimmers Jared Rabadam, Andrew Rucker, Reid Caswell, and junior Caden Blamer posted a 1:23.26 time.
St. Xavier took home the final event as senior swimmers Alex Ingram and Thackston McMullan, junior Jaeger Ellerman, and sophomore Chase Grisi earned a time of 3:01.01. Runner-up was Jackson (3:05.55) seniors Holden Nist, Ezra Herring, Luke Vickers, and Daniel Ham. Upper Arlington placed 3 rd after senior swimmers Reid Caswell, Jared Rabadam, Gabe Miller, and sophomore Griffin O’Neil had a time of 3:05.74.
Solon senior Dominic Roberto was the 1-meter diving champ after scoring 591.75 points. This was Dominic’s fourth consecutive diving championship and he was also awarded the Boys Division I Performer of the Meet.
