STATE TOURNAMENT RECAP

 

MASON, Ohio — The 43rd annual OHSAA Girls Tennis State Tournament concluded Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

 

Division I

In the Division I singles final, senior Anna Roggenburk of Rocky River Magnificat beat senior Kelli Niehaus of Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 6-4, 6-0. Robbenburk has won both of Magnificat's state singles championships. 

 

The third place match in Division I singles was won by junior Olivia Rondini from Rocky River Magnificat. She defeated Emma Peeler from Westlake 6-3, 6-0.

 

In the Division I doubles final, sophomores Danielle Schoenly and Maddie Atway of Powell Olentangy Liberty defeated Hannah Kassaie and Caitlyn Hsu of Mayfield 6-2, 6-3. Schoenly and Atway earn their second state championship.

 

Juniors Sanjana Reddy and Ananya Aggarwal of Mason secured a third place finish after a 6-1, 7-5 victory over sophomore Raina Chada and junior Annie Kruse, also of Mason. Reddy returned to the state tournament for the second year after being eliminated in the first round last season by Schoenly and Atway.

 

Division II

The Division II girls tennis state tournament was dominated by Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown.

 

Junior Nicole Gillinov of Hathaway Brown defeated sophomore Sydni Ratliff from Gahanna Columbus Academy 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to secure a first place finish in the Division II singles bracket. Gillinov was runner-up her freshman year and is now a two-time champion.

Freshman Rylie Hanford of Chesterland West Geauga secured a third place finish when she defeated junior Blessing Nwaozuzu of Pepper Pike Orange 6-3, 6-4.

Hathaway Brown sent two teams to the Division II doubles final. Seniors Isabellla Daverio and Rebecca Wolf defeated fellow teammates, junior Isabella Godsick and senior Megan Qiang. 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Godsick and Qiang were the defending state champions.

It is the second year in a row that Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown has been the Division II doubles champion and runner-up in the same season.

Securing a third place finish was junior Ava McQuillin and senior Maverick Delp of Toledo Central Catholic. They defeated Amy Lazbin and Morgan Dobos of Richfield Revere 6-1, 6-0.
