MASON, Ohio - The 46th Annual OHSAA Girls Tennis Division I State Tournament concluded Saturday afternoon at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
In the singles final, Mason junior Shyla Aggarwal returned to the state championship and secured a win with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lilly Black, a junior from Whitehouse Anthony Wayne. Aggarwa helped Mason return to their 11th straight state tournament and secured their first state title. The third place Division I singles match included sophomore Tess Bucher from North Canton Hoover and senior Ella Franz from Olentangy Berlin. Franz secured a third place finish with the score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
The Division I doubles championship included Centerville sophomore Clara Owen and junior Caroline Hinshaw facing off with Rocky River Magnificat senior Kayra Koprulu and junior Caroline Moritz. The combo of Owen and Hinshaw secured their first state championship by a score of 6-3, 6-0. This was Centerville’s 10th doubles state title.
Rocky River Magnificat senior Audrey Smitek and sophomore Natalie Smitek secured a Division I doubles third-place finish after defeating Mason senior Anna Tonkal and junior Risha Chada.
2021 Division II Girls Tennis Tournament Recap
MASON, Ohio - The 46th Annual OHSAA Girls Tennis Division II State Tournament concluded Saturday afternoon at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
Eaton junior Macy Hitchcock won the singles state championship after defeating Pepper Pike Orange junior Alexis Nyborg, 6-1, 6-2. Hitchcock has now won back to back state championships.
The third place match included Kettering Archbishop Alter senior Grace Lampman facing off against freshman Elena Fleming of Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. The match ended with Lampman being victorious with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
The doubles final consisted of Eaton senior Grace Murphy and freshman Mallory Hitchcock facing off against Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown School sophomore Kate Mills and junior Ally Mills. The duo of Murphy and Hitchcock were able to secure a state championship win with a score of 6-2, 6-1. This was Eaton’s first doubles state title and their third overall tennis state championship crown.
Columbus Wellington School senior Alexis Burkhalter and junior Katie Zerbi finished third place in the Division II tournament after defeating Richfield Revere junior Maddie Kavenagh and senior Morgan Dobos.
