2023 OHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championship Recaps
Archbishop Moeller Defeated Olentangy Liberty in Inaugural OHSAA State Title Game
Springfield, Ohio – Coming back from a 0-2 set deficit, Archbishop Moeller defeated Olentangy Liberty 3-2 (19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-13) in the inaugural OHSAA Division I state title game Sunday at the Pam Evans Smith Arena at Wittenberg University.
This is Archbishop Moeller’s first OHSAA state title but have won 10 state titles previously. The Crusaders finished the season 23-4. They totaled 17 kills in the third & fourth set; hitting 62 & 58 percent. Moeller won 15-13 in the final set, putting up nine kills.
The Crusaders were led by Senior Will Patterson with 21 kills, four blocks, while freshman Tyler Wong had 33 serve receptions and 17 digs. Junior Ben Marcum totaled 52 assists and nine digs.
In Liberty’s first boys’ volleyball state tournament junior Caden Whiteside led the Patriots with 28 kills, while junior Connor Severson had 54 assists. Senior Ryan Severson had 41 serve receptions, 14 digs, and 16 kills.
St. Francis DeSales Secured first Boys Volleyball State Championship
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Columbus St. Francis DeSales came back from a first set defecit to secure the first Division II boys volleyball state championship after defeating Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (21-25, 27-25, 25-17, 25-22) Sunday at Pam Evans Smith Arena at Wittenburg University.
St. Francis DeSales (20-4) overcame a 0-1 set deficit to win 3-1. The Stallions were led by senior Evan Althouse with 25 kills while senior Cameron Hoying had 40 assists.
St. Vincent-St. Mary (18-5) senior duo Riles Guseman and Ethan Zyszyski had 15 and 12 kills respectively. Fighting Irish junior Brennan Chivers had 41 assists and junior Mike Walter contributed 16 digs.
The 2023 tournament marked St. Francis Desales' first visit to the state tournament, predating OHSAA sanctions.
