Mentor Lake Catholic Takes Home Back-to-Back State Championship Trophies
DAYTON, Ohio - Defending their state championship title, Mentor Lake Catholic swept Cincinnati Archbishop McNicholas (25-17, 25-22, 25-13) in three sets during the Division III state final game Saturday at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.
Lake Catholic (28-0) caps off its undefeated season with a tenth trip to the state tournament and third state title overall (2010, 2022, 2023). Six of the ten appearances were made in the last eight years.
Cougars senior Katie Sowko led with 21 of the 47 team kills. Senior Hannah Pattie had 40 assists and junior Julie Oster had three service aces.
Making its first appearance in the state tournament, Archbishop McNicholas (21-7) was led by junior Lucy Perkins and freshman Savanna Stacey with seven kills each. Senior Maria Billies contributed 22 assists.
Cincinnati Mercy McAuley Wins Fifth State Title
DAYTON, Ohio - Cincinnati Mercy McAuley fought through a five set match (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 16-14) against Gates Mills Gilmour Academy in the Division II state final game Saturday at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.
The title is the first for Mercy McCauley since the school formed in 2017. As separate schools, McAuley and Mother of Mercy made 11 appearances in the state tournament and won four state championship (1977, 1980, 1982, 2007).
The Wolves (25-4) had 56 team kills led by senior Sophia Adkins with 19. Senior Maria Drapp added 46 assists and the team had 85 digs.
Gilmour Academy (18-11) visited the state tournament for the fifth straight year, making 13 overall appearances. The Lancers were the defending state runner-ups. Junior Marlie Davis led with 13 kills and junior Kayla Channell added 11 kills. The Lancers had 20 team blocks.
Kings Mills Kings Secures First State Title
DAYTON, Ohio – Kings Mills Kings swept Lewis Center Olentangy Orange in three sets (25-16, 25-10, 25-21) Saturday in the Division I final at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. Both schools made their first appearance in the state tournament.
Kings (28-1) senior Elise Marchal set an Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament record with 28 kills in the three set match.
The Knights had 51 team kills and eight service aces. Senior Abby Yoder had 38 assists.
Olentangy Orange (26-4) trio of sophomore Maci Gerboth, senior Maddie Cugino, and senior Lily Barron each had seven kills for the Pioneers. Sophomore Izzy Scholvin had 21 assists.
New Bremen Takes Home Back-to-Back State Championship Trophy
DAYTON, Ohio – New Bremen secured its second straight state championship title after defeating Tiffin Calvert in four sets (25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 25-16) Saturday in the OHSAA Division IV state championship match at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.
New Bremen (25-4) made its sixth appearance in the state tournament and takes home its fourth state championship trophy (2017, 2019, 2022).
The Cardinals were led in scoring by senior Olivia Heitkamp with 20 of the team's 58 kills. Junior Melina Schrader had 40 assists.
Calvert (27-2) senior duo Caroline Lanicek and Camryn Shook led the Senecas with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Calvert made its third appearance at the state tournament.
