2024 State Tournament Recaps

Cincinnati Seton Won Seventh State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - Cincinnati Seton defeated Cleveland St. Joseph Academy in three sets (26-24, 25-16, 25-15) in the Division I state final Saturday at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
Seton (26-2), ranked first in the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll, made its 13th appearance in the state tournament, most recently in 2005. The Saints were state champions in 2024, 2005, 1996, 1988, 1986, 1985, 1984. 
 
Sophomore Charley Moeddel and juniors Callie Combs and Nattie Slusher all had 10 kills each. Senior Reagan Miller contributed 21 assists. 
 
Fourth ranked St. Joseph Academy (19-9) made its second straight visit to the state tournament, fifth overall. The Jaguars were state runner-up in 2017. Senior Chloe Smith led the scoring with 11 kills and senior Belle Groomes had 23 assists. 
 
 
Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy Wins Eigth State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Whitehouse Anthony Wayne in a five set match (23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-9) Saturday in the Division II state final at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
In the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll St. Ursula Academy (22-4) was ranked second, Anthony Wayne (25-2) was ranked first. 
 
St. Ursula made its 12th appearance in the state tournament, taking home its eighth championship trophy (2003, 2001, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993).  The Bulldogs were led by senior Molly Creech with 30 kills and 23 digs. Senior Emsley Venard had 60 assists. 
 
This year marks Anthony Wayne's first visit to the state tournament. The Generals were led in scoring by senior sisters Leah and Mallory Pike with 30 and 22 kills respectively. Senior Aubrey Rieger had 52 assists. 
 
 
Gates Mills Gilmour Academy Wins Fourth State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - Gates Mills Gilmour Academy defeated Cincinnati Ursuline Academy in four sets (25-20, 25-22, 28-30, 25-22) on Friday during the Division III state final at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
Gilmour Academy (24-2) was ranked second in the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll. This year marked the sixth consecutive visit to the state tournament by the Lancers. Gillmour Academy was state champion in 2024, 2021, 2020, and 2015. 
 
Senior duo Kayla Channell and Aubrey Anders had 20 and 19 kills respectively. Fellow senior Ella Jackson had 53 assists. 
 
Ursuline Academy (21-7), ranked third, made its 16th appearance in the state tournament. The Lions have eight state championships, and five runner-up titles. Senior Katie Gielas has 21 kills and senior Addy Franz contributed 34 assists. 
 
 
St. Bernard Roger Bacon Wins Fourth State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - St. Bernard Roger Bacon took home its fourth state championship trophy after defeating Alliance Marlington in three sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) in the Division IV state final at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
Roger Bacon, ranked third in the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll, was state champion in 2024, 2005, 2004, 2001. This year marked its ninth visit in the state tournament.  
 
The Spartans were led in scoring by senior Raegan Waller and junior Etellina Jackson, each with 11 kills. Senior Ally Hughes had 30 assists and senior Ava Otto had 6 service aces. 
 
Marlington (27-2), ranked fourth, made its second appearance in the state tournament (2024, 2023) and took home its first trophy. Dukes senior Layne Graffice had 11 kills, junior Cali Young had 18 assists, and senior Jacsyn Hilliard had 14 digs. 
 
 
Mentor Lake Catholic Secures Third Straight State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - Mentor Lake Catholic took home its third straight, fourth total state championship trophy after defeating Franklin Bishop Fenwick in four sets (25-18, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20) Friday in the Division V state championship match at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
Lake Catholic (24-4) made its 11th appearance in the state tournament, continuing its four-year streak. This is the fourth overall state championship (2024, 2023, 2022, 2010). Lake Catholic was ranked first in the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll. 
 
Cougars sophomore Ahnna Bergant led with 16 kills and junior Ava Starr had 47 assists. Lake Catholic had 13 team service aces and 10 team blocks. 
 
Bishop Fenwick (16-13) takes home its third title (2019, 2010) after making its seventh appearance at the state tournament. Sophomore Morgan Miering had 19 kills. Senior Brookelyn Zuech had 20 assists and sophomore Abby Keller contributed 17. 
 
 
Undefeated Coldwater Won First State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - Coldwater took home its first state championship after defeating Marion Pleasant in three sets (25-28, 25-18, 25-12) in the Division VI state final Saturday at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
Coldwater (29-0), ranked first in the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll, finished its season undefeated. The Cavaliers made four appearances in the state tournament (2024, 2022, 2017, 1994). 
 
Coldwater was led by senior Morgan Blasingame with 16 kills, and junior Mia Knapke with 28 assists. 
 
Pleasant (25-4) made its first appearance in the state tournament. The Spartans sophomore Kamryn Cocherl had 19 kills and senior Sydney Smith had 28 assists. 
 
 
Fort Loramie Takes Home Its Second State Championship
 
DAYTON, OH - Fort Loramie secured its second state championship trophy after sweeping formerly undefeated Tiffin Calvert (25-17, 25-20, 25-17) in three sets during the first Division VII state final at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. 
 
Fort Loramie (28-1), ranked second in the final regular-season OHSVCA coaches poll, made its third trip to the state tournament, all three trips were made in the last decade. State championship trophies were won in 2014 and 2024. 
 
The Redskins were led in scoring by senior Avery Brandewie with 30 kills and senior Jenna Barhorst had 39 assists. Fort Loramie had 8 team blocks and 64 team digs. 
 
Tiffin Calvert (28-1) made its fourth appearance in the state tournament, most recently taking home the state runner-up trophy in 2023.  Sophomore Bryn Dircksen led the Senecas with 26 assists. Tiffin Calvert were ranked seconding entering the tournament.
