Fort Loramie Shuts Out Newark Catholic Again in State Title
Game
Hoying fires one-hitter in complete-game effort
Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio - In a rematch of the 2007 Div. IV state
championship game won by Fort Loramie 4-0, the ninth-ranked Redskins again shutout the
Green Wave 3-0 to claim their second state title Saturday at the 2010 OHSAA Div. IV
baseball state tournament at Huntington Park in Columbus.
The story of this game, as it was for much of the year for Fort
Loramie, was pitching. Coming in with an ERA of 0.70 and 12 victories, senior pitcher
Justin Hoying kept Newark Catholic hitters off balance all day, giving up
only a
first-inning single en route to Fort Loramie's ninth shutout of the season. Hoying struck
out four and did not allow a Green Wave base runner to reach third base the entire game.
Fort Loramie got on the board in the second inning after a
lead-off walk to senior catcher Jake Boerger and an RBI single by senior outfielder Jake
Bowles two outs later. An unearned run later in the inning gave the Redskins an early
two-run advantage. Senior outfielder Mitch Raterman provided an insurance run in the fifth
inning with a lead-off home run off the left field foul pole.
Newark Catholic, in its 11th state tournament appearance, was
denied its seventh state championship. The Green Wave were trying to become the second
team in OHSAA state tournament history to win a state title with a losing record. Newark
Catholic finishes the season at 15-20, while Fort Loramie improves to 30-3.

Clear Fork Pulls Away from Wheelersburg to Capture First
State Title
Colts plate 10 in final two innings to bury Pirates
Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 2 Bellville Clear Fork blew open a tight
game with three runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth to capture its first state
title as the Colts defeated No. 8 Wheelersburg 14-3 in six innings Sunday at the 2010 OHSAA Div. III state baseball championship at Huntington Park in Columbus.
In a game that was started on Saturday and suspended until
Sunday due to rain, Clear Fork jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, thanks in part to a
three-run inside-the-park homerun by senior Matt Squires. Wheelersburg pulled within one
run after a two-run single in the third by senior Andrew Elliott and an unearned run in
the fourth.
Clear Fork exploded in the final two frames,
however, scoring ten to put
the Pirates away. Junior Jordan McCune collected three hits, while seniors Justin Blake,
Brendan Liberti, Jake Dickerson, Travis Hissong, and Squires picked up two hits apiece.
After tossing a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in the
semifinal, Hissong came on in relief to pick up the win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings,
while striking out five.
It was the first state tournament appearance for the Colts, who
finish 32-2 on the season. Wheelersburg was looking for its second state title in its
third state appearance and finishes the season at 31-2.

Lakewood St. Edward's Grabs Third State Title, Second in Last Three Years
Eagles score eight runs behind Allie's 16-strikeout performance
Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 4 Lakewood St. Edward powered its way to
its third state title and second in the last three years when the Eagles beat No. 2
Cincinnati Elder 8-3 in the 2010 OHSAA Div. I state baseball championship at Huntington
Park in Columbus.
The Eagles scored four runs in both the fourth and the sixth
innings behind three hits and two RBI from senior Ross Kivett, two hits and two RBI by
sophomore Tommy Mirabelli and three hits by junior Vince Bartolone. St. Edward pounded out
14 hits in total, eight of which came in the two run-scoring innings.
Elder's bats couldn't get going until the sixth inning, when it
plated three runs. Senior power pitcher Stetson Allie, who picked up two saves in St.
Edward's last state tournament appearance, pitched six innings to pick up the win. Sixteen
of the 18 outs Allie recorded came via the strikeout, two shy of the Div. I state
tournament record.
St. Edward finishes the season at 28-3 and denies Elder its
13th state championship. The Panthers, who were playing in the state tournament for the
20th time, fall to 28-5 on the year.

Jonathan Alder Caps Undefeated Season with Second State Championship
Pioneers hang on and win thrilling state title game
Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Top-ranked Plain City Jonathan Alder completed
a 34-0 undefeated season when it defeated No. 2 Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit 3-2 Saturday
in the 2010 OHSAA Div. II state championship at Huntington Park in Columbus.
Walsh Jesuit got on the board first with a first-inning home
run over the centerfield wall by senior John Fasola to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Senior pitcher Zach Maynard settled down after the blast, allowing only four hits, while
striking out nine. The Pioneers tied the game after junior Graham Johnston hit a one-out
triple and scored on sophomore Nate Squires' suicide squeeze play. Jonathan Alder scored
the go-ahead run in the 5th inning on senior Sean Fleming's RBI single.
The Pioneers added what proved to be a large insurance run in
the bottom of the 6th on a Squires' RBI single. In the top of the inning, Walsh Jesuit
plated a run to pull within one, but Maynard induced a game-ending groundout with runners on second
and third to clinch the title.
Jonathan Alder becomes the first team to complete an undefeated
season since Toledo Start went unbeaten in 1994. The Pioneers other state championship
came in 1998. Walsh Jesuit, appearing in the title game for the third consecutive season,
was denied its fifth state title and finishes the season at 30-2.
