Moeller Holds Off Westlake for Sixth State Championship
Crusaders score nine runs in winning Division I state title
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Second-ranked
Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller won its sixth baseball state title,
defeating No. 19 Westlake 9-6 in the OHSAA Div. I state championship
game Saturday at Huntington Park in Columbus.
Moeller has now won at least one title in
each of the past five decades (72, 89, 93, 04, 09, 12).
The Crusaders (26-5) scored eight runs in
the first three innings of the game and one in the last four, while
Westlake scored one run in the second, third and fourth innings, while
adding two in the seventh.
Moeller had eight players collect one-hit with senior Ty Amann, junior
Spencer Iacovone and sophomore Riley Mahan each driving in two runs.
Even with the early deficit Westlake would
not relent, chipping away at the Moeller lead. The Demons were led
offensively by senior�s Corey Bowers, Andrew Dunn and junior Jamie
Lackner who collectively totaled for five hits, five RBI and two runs.
Westlake leaves its first state tournament
appearance as runners-up, finishing the season 24-7.

DeSales Wins Back-to-Back Baseball Titles
#4 Stallions defeat #6 Wapakoneta
3-2 in Division II championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Fourth-ranked
Columbus St. Francis DeSales held off sixth-ranked Wapakoneta, 3-2, to
win the OHSAA Division II state baseball championship game Saturday at
Huntington Park in Columbus.
The 2012 championship is DeSales� second in
as many years after defeating Akron Archbishop Hoban last year. The
championship is the Stallions� third overall having also won the title
in 1979.
DeSales (26-6) took advantage of an early
RBI bases loaded walk by senior Derek Traini and a Wapakoneta error in
the fourth inning to plate two runs. Senior catcher Jack Miller drove in
the third Stallions run win an RBI single in the fourth. Miller was
two-for-two on the day, scoring two runs.
Wapakoneta scored once in the fourth and had
an opportunity in the sixth after junior Josh Apple doubled down the
left field line, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior Brandon
Miller. The Redskins� threat continued after a hit-by-pitch and a walk,
however, they were unable to push across any more runs.
In its first trip to the state tournament
Wapakoneta finishes as state runner-up and a 25-6 record.

Wheelersburg Wins Pitcher�s Duel for Second Title

Catholic 1-0 in Division III championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Seventh-ranked Wheelersburg defeated unranked
Lima Central Catholic 1-0 in a well-pitched OHSAA Division III state
baseball championship game Saturday at Huntington Park in Columbus.
Wheelersburg freshman pitcher Wade Martin took a 1-0 lead and perfect
game into the seventh inning, when Lima Central Catholic senior Travis
Clark tripled with one out. Clark was pinch ran for by senior Ryan
Cousey, who was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball fielder�s
choice to sophomore second basemen Garrett Carmichael. A walk, ground
ball and an out later Wheelersburg (30-2) had sealed the victory.
Martin went seven innings for Wheelersburg, allowing one hit and one
walk, while striking out nine. Central Catholic junior Nick Watkins went
six innings, allowing only two hits and the single run.
The lone run in the game came in the Wheelersburg fourth, when senior
Austin Boyer singled into left field. Boyer advanced to second base on a
sacrifice bunt by junior Ben Arnold and to third on a wild pitch.
Carmichael grounded to the Central Catholic shortstop who tried
unsuccessfully to throw Boyer out at the plate.
Central Catholic, making its second state tournament appearance,
finishes as state runner-up for the first time. The Thunderbirds
finished the season 22-9.
In its fifth trip to the state tournament, Wheelersburg wins its second
title, the first coming in 1996.

Minster Wins Second Title in Walk-Off Fashion
Back-to-back titles for Wildcats, defeat
Cuyahoga Heights 5-4
COLUMBUS, Ohio � In the bottom of the seventh inning Minster
junior Devon Poeppelman singled to left field scoring junior Jay
Eilerman from second base to lift the Wildcats to a 5-4 victory over
Cuyahoga Heights in the OHSAA Division IV championship game Saturday at
Huntington Park in Columbus.
Minster (26-6) built itself a four run lead through five innings, while
holding the Redskins scoreless. Cuyahoga Heights climbed back in the top
of the seventh inning scoring four runs to tie the game on three hits
and an error.
Offensivley Minster was led by Eilerman, Poeppelman and senior Doug
Huber who all collected two hits each. Huber also drove in two runs.
Cuyahoga Heights senior catcher Andrew Tesler had two hits for the
Redskins, while junior Jason Kleppel drove in two runs.
Minster has now made three state tournament appearances in 10 years,
currently winning back-to-back titles and finishing as runner up in
2003.
Cuyahoga Heights was making its first trip back to the state tournament
since 1976, where the Redskins also finished as runner-up. Cuyahoga
Heights finished with a 25-5 record.
