Wheelersburg Rallies Past Bloom-Carroll for Back-to-Back Titles
Tenth-ranked Pirates score two in bottom of seventh to win 5-4
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Tenth-ranked Wheelersburg rallied from a one run
deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring two runs to defeat
eighth-ranked Carroll Bloom-Carroll 5-4 in the 2013 OHSAA Division III
baseball state championship game Saturday afternoon at Huntington Park in
Columbus.
The Pirates (29-4) win back-to-back Division III state championships, taking
advantage of nine hits and three walks to score five runs. Wheelersburg
scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Bloom-Carroll. The state
championship is the Pirates third overall winning in 1996 and 2012.
Wheelersburg senior pitcher Derek Moore earned the win in final and
semifinal game after coming in to pitch a scoreless seventh inning in relief
of championship game starter, sophomore Wade Martin. Martin went six innings
allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out three.
Offensively the Pirates were led by junior catcher Dylan Miller who drove in
two runs on two hits. Junior Garrett Carmichael also collected two hits,
while scoring a run.
Bloom-Carroll (26-7) was led by senior Blake Smith, junior Scott Baker and
sophomore Roger Danison, who each had two hits and a run batted in for the
Bulldogs. Bloom-Carroll finishes as state runner-up for second time in
school history, earning that honor in its only other trip to the state
tournament in 1974.

Bulldogs defeat Jonathan Alder
8-2 to win first state title since 1992
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Number-one ranked Defiance and senior pitcher
Weston Rivers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, ultimately
defeating No. 17 Plain City Jonathan Alder 8-2 in the 2013 OHSAA
Division II state baseball championship game Saturday evening at
Huntington Park in Columbus.
Rivers struck out 15 Pioneer batters allowing four hits and two runs,
all coming in the final inning. His pitching performance came on the
heels of senior teammate Robert Zeigler�s 14 strikeout performance in
the Bulldogs� 5-1 semifinal victory over Akron Archbishop Hoban.
Defiance (31-1) was led offensively senior Austin Yant with two runs
batted in, while Zeigler and juniors Dom Romero, Derek Turner and Austin
Hancock all collected two hits.
The state championship is Defiance�s second overall in four trips to the
state tournament. The Bulldogs� last won the title in 1992.
Jonathan Alder�s senior Connor Swick and junior Scott Peters scored the
Pioneers� runs in the seventh. Junior Bret Yutzy collected a run batted
in during the inning. The Pioneers (29-4) finish as state runners-up for
the first time, adding to the state championship titles the program has
in 1998 and 2010.

Green Wave win seventh state title
in baseball, first since 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio � A game dominated by good pitching, defense and sound
fundamental baseball, No. 7 Newark Catholic defeated unranked New Middletown
Springfield 2-1 in the 2013 OHSAA Division IV state baseball championship
Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park.
Newark Catholic (24-10) claims its seventh state title with the victory,
moving into second place all-time in baseball championships. The Green Wave
only trail Cincinnati Elder, which has 12 titles. Newark Catholic has won
its seven titles in 14 state tournament appearances. The school�s last
championship came in 2006.
Springfield (21-8) scored in the top of the first inning on four straight
singles by sophomore Ryan Kohler, senior Cody Pitzo, junior Joey Wrask and
sophomore Hunter Snyder. The run would prove to be the only of the afternoon
for the Tigers, despite eight hits during the game.
Newark Catholic took advantage of the eight hits it collected scoring twice.
Junior Hunter Nance drove in the Green Wave�s first run in the third inning
with an RBI single and in the fourth inning senior David Meurer doubled to
right centerfield scoring junior Conor Keck and what was the ultimate
winning run.
Springfield finished as state runner-up for the fourth time in school
history and the third time in five years (2013, 2011, and 2009). The Tigers
were in their sixth state tournament.

Moeller Outslugs St. Ignatius to
Win Seventh Baseball Championship
Crusaders defeat Wildcats 7-1 to
win back-to-back state titles
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Second-ranked Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller slugged
12 hits en route to consecutive baseball state championships and a 7-1
victory over No. 17 Cleveland St. Ignatius in the 2013 OHSAA Division I
state championship game Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park.
Moeller (32-2) wins its seventh state baseball championship to tie Newark
Catholic for second place all-time. Newark Catholic won its seventh
championship just hours prior on Sunday in the Division IV championship
game. Both schools trail all-time leader Cincinnati Elder, which has 12
state titles.
The Crusaders collected 12 hits led by senior Max Foley, who went
three-for-four and junior Riley Mahan who added two more hits to the five he
had in the state semifinal victory. Senior Justin Wampler drove in two runs
in the game.
The Wildcats (27-7) could only manage two hits and one run against Moeller
junior left-hander Zach Logue. Allowing his defense to make plays throughout
the course of the game, Logue struck out four Wildcat batters.
St. Ignatius� lone run came on an RBI single by senior Tyler Finkler. The
Wildcats finish as state runners-up for the third time, the last in 2008, in
their 11th state tournament appearance.
St. Ignatius and Moeller previously had met four times in the state
tournament, all semifinal games. The series record began the day at 2-2,
with St. Ignatius victorious in 2000 and 2008 and Moeller in 2004 and 2009.
The 2013 state championship victory gives the Crusaders a 3-2 edge in the
series.
