Hathaway Brown Claims Third Consecutive State Title
Blazers defeat Dayton Carroll 54-51 for OHSAA Division II girls basketball state crown

COLUMBUS, Ohio Unranked Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown came back from an early deficit and maintained its position for the final three quarters, as the Blazers went on to win the 2011 OHSAA Division II girls basketball championship Saturday in the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The win gives Hathaway Brown its third consecutive state title.

Fourth-ranked Dayton Carroll (23-5) jumped out to a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, riding the aggressive play of second-team All-Ohio junior guard Kelly Austria, who had 10 points in the opening period. The Patriots shot 54 percent from the field in the first quarter and looked poised to make the most of its first state finals appearance before the two-time defending champions took a stand.

Hathaway Brown (18-9) improved its offensive output and defensive pressure from the second quarter on. The Blazers were led by senior captain Molly Crosby, who recorded 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Tanisha Lawler and sophomore Vanessa Smith also tallied 12 points apiece.

The win makes Hathaway Brown the 15th school in Ohio girls basketball history to win three state championships. It is also only the second team to reach a state championship game with nine losses or more. The Blazers set a new set a state record, among schools in all divisions, for most regular season losses by a state champion.

Dayton Carroll was making its first state finals appearance in school history. The Patriots were led by an outstanding effort by Austria, who led the way with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting.

Harvest Prep Wins Second Consecutive State Title
Warriors defeat Fort Loramie 51-31 for OHSAA Division IV State Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a sloppy first half for both teams, top-ranked Canal Winchester Harvest Preparatory emerged as the 2011 OHSAA Division IV girls basketball state champion after defeating Fort Loramie 51-31 Saturday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The win gives the Warriors their second consecutive state championship and second overall in school history.

In the first quarter, Harvest Prep and Fort Loramie shot 20 percent and 13 percent from the field, respectively. Harvest Prep was able to set an up-tempo pace throughout, however, and was able to capitalize by taking a 19-15 lead into halftime. The defensive pressure continued for the remainder of the game, as Harvest Prep accumulated 14 steals and forced Fort Loramie into 23 turnovers.

The Warriors were led offensively by first-team All-Ohio senior forward and Division IV Player of the Year Shicole Watts, who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Jaren Francis added 14 points.

Despite holding a 30-to-9 advantage in free throw attempts, Fort Loramie was only able to hit 50 percent of its shots from the charity stripe. The Redskins shooting woes extended beyond the free-throw line, as they only mustered an 18 percent field goal shooting percentage for the game (7-for-40).

Unranked Fort Loramie was paced by third-team All-Ohio senior guard Janel Olberding, who tallied 10 points and five rebounds. It was the Redskins second appearance in the state finals, as they also finished as runners-up in 1997.

Anna Rockets Past Oak Hill for First Title in 30 Years
Anna downs the Lady Oaks 50-32 for the Division III championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio Third-ranked Anna started hot and never looked back to defeat No. 1 ranked Oak Hill 50-32, in the OHSAA girls Division III state basketball championship Saturday night in the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

Anna (27-1) dictated the tempo of the game early and was able to maintain the pace it wanted for the entire game. The Rockets were helped by a great night from senior Megan Fogt, who led the way recording a double-double with 16 points while grabbing 17 rebounds. Sophomore Natalie Billing had a championship game to remember as well, scoring a game-high 21 points alongside four rebounds and two steals. As a team, Anna shot 51 percent from the field and 56 percent from the free throw line.

Oak Hill played with great resolve despite getting behind early. The Lady Oaks battled cold shooting throughout the game, finishing with a 25 percent field goal percentage from the field. Oak Hill was led by junior Taylor Hale, who finished with nine points and six rebounds.

The state championship is Annas second girls basketball title and its first in 30 years. The Rockets last won the title in 1981 and followed up with a state semifinal appearance in 1982. This years state tournament trip marks the first time Anna has returned to the final four since that 1982 campaign.

Oak Hill (25-1) finishes as the state runner-up for the third time in three trips to the championship game. The Lady Oaks were also runners-up in 2009 and 2004.

Second-ranked Twinsburg overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat fourth-ranked Kettering Fairmont 55-42, to win its first OHSAA girls Division I basketball championship Saturday night at Value City Arena in the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

In a hard fought, championship game, Twinsburg outscored the Firebirds 36-16 in the second half to pull away, eventually winning by 13. The Tigers were paced by junior Malina Howard, who totaled 20 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes. Kettering Fairmont was led by freshman Kathyrn Westbeld, who posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  On the other side of the paint for the Firebirds, freshman Makayla Waterman tallied 13 points and seven rebounds.
