REVIEW:
25th Annual State Field Hockey Tournament, November 1 and 2, Henry Street Field, Ohio
Wesleyan University, Delaware
Shaker Heights
Hathaway Brown (19-0) stopped Gahanna Columbus Academys streak of three-straight
titles when it defeated the Vikings in the championship, 1-0 in two overtimes. Senior
forward Alex Kern scored the game winner at the 5:12 mark of the second extra session. The
victory gave the Blazers their first state title in their fourth appearance in the
tournament and the first head coach Amy Longley, in her 25th year as the schools
head coach. Hathaway Brown became the 10th school to finish the season unbeaten and the
third to finish with no losses or ties (Kettering Fairmont was 19-0 in 1983; Kettering
Fairmont West was 12-0 in 1979).
The loss
not only snapped Academys three-year run of titles, but the all-time leader in state
titles (six) also suffered its first loss in 71 contests (67-1-3).
Hathaway
Brown reached the finals by stopping Dayton Oakwood in the semifinals, 2-0, behind goals
by Floyd and senior wing Alex Kern. Columbus Academy was a 3-0 semifinal winner over
Worthington Thomas Worthington as senior attacker Liz Young, freshman attacker Kelly
Hondrus and junior midfielder Amy Marotta scored goals. |
