Columbus
Academy, which is making its 17th state tournament appearance, has
become a household name in girls field hockey. The Vikings have only
missed qualifying for the state tournament only three times since 1993
(2007, 2005, 1995) and hold the state record with eight state titles.
They defeated Powell Olentangy Liberty, 1-0, in the district finals.
Their opponent, Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, is looking to win its
schools first state title after defeating 2010 champion Cincinnati St.
Ursula Academy, 1-0, in a shootout in the district finals. This is
Ursulines first state appearance since 2001 and third overall.
On the
other side of the bracket, Watterson returns to the state tournament for
the ninth time after an impressive 1-0 district final victory over the
2011 state champion, Thomas Worthington. The Eagles are attempting to
join Kettering Fairmont as the only school to have four state titles.
Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown, the 2011 runner-up, returns to the state
tournament for the 11th consecutive year and 14th overall. The Blazers
have two state titles (2002, 2008) and are hoping to become the fifth
school with three titles.
