Division III
Toledo Central Catholic
wins Thriller vs. The Plains Athens in Division III state championship,
56-52
COLUMBUS, Ohio The
Fighting Irish of Toledo Central Catholic claimed their third OHSAA football
state championship with a 56-52 victory over The Plains Athens in the 2014
OHSAA Division III state championship game Thursday night at Ohio Stadium.
There were 12 lead changes in the game, with the most crucial coming when
Toledo Central Catholic quarterback Marcus Winters scored a touchdown on a
fourth down and one from the eight yard line with 15 seconds remaining to
take a 56-52 lead, which would go on to clinch the win for the Fighting
Irish. Central Catholic has won two OHSAA state football championships in
the past three seasons (2012 and 2014).
The game marked the return
of the OHSAA football state championships to Ohio Stadium, which last hosted
the finals in 1989. The attendance Thursday night was 10,713.
Toledo Central Catholic led
Athens 21-19 at halftime. The Fighting Irish and Bulldogs exchanged four
lead changes in the third quarter alone, with Toledo Central Catholic
leading 35-31 heading into the fourth quarter. Athens took its final lead of
the game with 2:52 remaining after a Trae Williams touchdown run, putting
the score at 52-49. On the final drive for Central Catholic, the Fighting
Irish converted multiple fourth downs and went 71 yards on 12 plays to score
with 15 seconds remaining.
There
hasn't been a state title game at the Shoe in 25 years and I guess us
(Toledo Central Catholic) and Athens made up for that tonight, said
Toledo Central Catholic Head Coach Greg Dempsey.
I don't think you could see a much more exciting football game with the
heart and passion and fire that both teams played with. Our kids showed a
lot of resiliency and toughness tonight. I thought their (Athens) team and
coaching staff were a complete class act. What a way to start off this
weekend. It's a cliche, but it's sad that someone had to lose after the
effort that you saw displayed out on that field tonight."
This game set numerous
OHSAA Division III state championship game records and all-division state
championship game records. Toledo Central Catholic set the OHSAA Division
III state championship game record for rushing yards with 501, two yards shy
of breaking the OHSAA overall state championship game team rushing record
for all divisions. Central Catholic had three players finish with over 100
yards rushing (Michael Warren 194 yards, TreVon Wade 158 yards, Marcus
Winters 134 yards), marking only the second time in an OHSAA football state
championship game that three players finished with over 100 yards rushing in
a game. Toledo Central Catholics 56 points are the most points scored in an
OHSAA Division III football state championship game and rank sixth overall.
The Fighting Irish finished the game with 654 total yards, the most total
yards for one team in any OHSAA football state championship game (previous
record was 619).
Athens senior quarterback
and 2014 Associated Press Ohio Mr. Football Joe Burrow set the OHSAA
Division III state championship game record for passing touchdowns with six,
which tied the all-division record. Burrow also set the OHSAA Division III
state championship game record for passing yards with 446 (previous record
298 yards). Burrow set the OHSAA Division III state championship game record
for pass completions with 26 and finished 26 of 45 for 446 yards, six
touchdowns and one interception. Athens wide receivers Ryan Luehrman and
Adam Luehrman finished the game with two receiving touchdowns, tying the
OHSAA Division III football state championship game record for most
receiving touchdowns.
The game tied the record
for the most combined total yards in an OHSAA football state championship
game, with 1,217 total yards. The game set the record for most touchdowns
scored in a game with 16 (previous record was 11), most combined pass
attempts in an OHSAA Division III football state championship (62), most
combined rushing yards in an OHSAA football state championship (618 yards),
and the most combined passing yards in an OHSAA Division III football state
championship (599 yards).
The OHSAA football state
championships will continue Friday, December 5th at Ohio Stadium.
Division IV
Cleveland
Benedictine Win Seventh State Title
Bengals defeat
Kettering Archbishop Alter 21-14
COLUMBUS, Ohio
After scoring early in the fourth quarter to take the lead, fourth-ranked
Cleveland Benedictine stopped top-ranked Kettering Archbishop Alter on
fourth-and-two on the Benedinctine 36-yard line with one second remaining to clinch a 21-14 victory in the
2014 OHSAA football division IV state championship game Friday afternoon at
Ohio Stadium.
Benedictine
(14-1) won its seventh state title in its 19th appearance in the playoffs.
Benedictine becomes the sixth school in Ohio with at least seven state
titles.
I'm extremely proud of this group,
this entire team, said Benedictine head coach Joe Schaefer. These guys set
this team goal not just to play in this game. It was to win this game.
There was a lot of pressure on them. Every week, that bull's-eye gets bigger
in bigger. It just never mattered to them. They just kept showing up.
Benedictine was
first on the scoreboard in the first quarter when senior Jerome Baker rushed
for a 12-yard touchdown and sophomore kicker Alex DiFrancesco added the
extra point. In the second quarter, the Bengals defense added to the lead
with a 48-yard interception returned for a touchdown by junior Justin Layne.
Alter answered
when senior Alex Pack scored off a two-yard touchdown run and senior Alex
Craft added the extra point.
At the end of the
third quarter, Alter tied the game off senior Dusty Hayes 28-yard touchdown
run and Crafts extra point. Benedictine regained the lead early in the
fourth quarter on Bakers second touchdown of the game, a 14-yard rushing
touchdown. Alter attempted to tie the game on its last drive in the fourth
quarter, but Benedictines defense held strong and stopped the Knights on a
fourth-and-two.
Benedictines
Jerome Baker finished with 83 rushing yards on 12 attempts and two
touchdowns, as well as 55 yards passing. Alters Dusty Hayes finished with
79 yards rushing on 19 attempts and one touchdown, as well as 73 yards
passing.
Alter finished
the season 14-1 and as state runner up for the second time (2006). The
Knights were state champions in 2008 and 2009. This was their 20th playoff
appearance.
Division VI
Minster Wins Second
Football State Championship, First Since 1989
COLUMBUS, Ohio The
Minster Wildcats won in dramatic fashion Friday afternoon at Ohio Stadium,
rallying from a nine point deficit with 4:18 remaining to win its second
OHSAA state football championship, 46-42, over Kirtland. Minster has won 28
OHSAA team state championships as a school, tied for seventh all-time. The
Wildcats first OHSAA football state championship came 25 years ago, the
last time the OHSAA state football championships were held at Ohio Stadium.
Minster defeated McDonald 16-7 to win that game. Kirtland was playing in its
fourth-consecutive state championship, earning two state titles and two
state runner-up honors in that time.
What a cool deal. That was
two really good football teams competing, said Minster head coach Geron
Stokes. It came down to the last second. Credit Kirtland. What a run for
those guys. They're as tough and physical a team as we've played all year.
Credit our kids and the resiliency they showed. We did not belong here early
on in the year. This is the most improvement I've seen out of a team, a
group of kids that bought into being better. This is awesome.
Kirtland held a 21-20 lead
at halftime after exchanging five lead changes with Minster in the first
half. Minster regained the lead with 9:49 left in the third quarter with a
22 yard pass from Josh Nixon to Eli Wolf. Kirtland would respond, heading
into the fourth quarter with a 28-27 lead after a nine yard pass from Sam
Skiljan to Evan Madden. With 4:18 remaining, Kirtland extended its lead to
42-33 after Adam Hess scored from three yards out on his second rushing
touchdown of the game. With 1:56 to go, Minsters Evan Huelsman scored from
two yards out. Trailing 42-40, Minster attempted an onside kick, which was
recovered by junior kicker Jason Schultz. On second down, Nixon found Eli
Wolf for a 51 yard touchdown that would prove to be the game winning play
for the Wildcats.
Minster junior quarterback
Josh Nixon finished 26 of 41 passing, 417 yards, four touchdowns and two
interceptions. Sophomore receiver Bryce Schmiesing and senior receiver Eli
Wolf led the Wildcats in receiving. Schmiesing totaled seven catches, 150
yards and one touchdown, while Wolf added nine receptions for 145 yards and
three touchdowns.

running back Adam Hess. Hess, who finished with 181 yards and two touchdowns
in the 2013 Division VI state championship, carried the ball 39 times for
164 yards and two touchdowns Friday. Kirtland senior quarterback Sam Skiljan
finished 7-of-14 for 145 yards and three touchdowns. The Hornets were led in
receiving by senior Matthew Finkler, who finished with four catches, 120
yards and two touchdowns.
With Minsters state
championship, the Midwest Athletic Conference has now claimed 108 OHSAA
state championships.
The attendance for the 2014
OHSAA Division VI state championship was 7,361.
Division II
Cincinnati
LaSalle Too Much For Macedonia Nordonia, Wins First State Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio
Third-ranked Cincinnati LaSalle used its high-powered offense and aggressive
defense en route to defeating fifth-ranked Macedonia Nordonia 55-20 in the
2014 OHSAA football division II state championship game Friday night at Ohio
Stadium, clinching its first state title.
LaSalle (14-1)
set two Division II state championship game records. Its eight touchdowns
passed the previous record of seven held by two schools. The Lancers 55
points passed the previous record of 50 points held by Youngstown Cardinal
Mooney in 1980.
Prior to this
year, LaSalle had not won a playoff game in its four playoff appearances.
"Coming out of
our chapel gathering on Thursday, our offense called for the ball to start
the game. We drove down the field and scored and that was a huge momentum
boost, LaSalle head coach Nate Moore said after the game. "The interception
at the end of the half and the blocked punt in the third quarter were all
big plays. We played well in all three phases of the game. We felt good
about our pass rush but our defensive backs really played above our
expectations. We spent the last 15 weeks holding it together and now get to
celebrate."
The Lancers got
on the scoreboard first when junior Jeremy Larkin rushed for a 4-yard
touchdown. Nordonia senior Jimmy Embrescia kicked a 23-yard field goal to
put the Knights on the board. LaSalle would answer with another Larkin
touchdown, this time a 45-yard touchdown run. Embrescias 30-yard field goal
cut LaSalles lead to eight at the end of the first quarter.
In the second
quarter, LaSalle junior Nick Watson rushed for a 9-yard touchdown. Nordonia
senior David Murray found freshman Tye Evans for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
With the Lancers leading 21-13, they scored the next five touchdowns of the
game. Sophomore Jarell White scored on a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Senior
Avery Larkin returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown. Senior John
Junker blocked a Nordonia punt and returned it 15 yards to the end zone.
Watson found senior Phil Anderson for a 23-yard touchdown reception. Senior
Eric Green also scored on a 4-yard rushing touchdown. In the final minutes,
Nordonias Murray connected to senior Alex Alders for a 26-yard touchdown
reception.
LaSalles Larkin
finished with 104 yards rushing on 17 attempts and two touchdowns. Watson
finished with 72 yards passing, completing four of five passes, with one
touchdown, as well as 43 rushing yards on nine attempts and one touchdown.
Nodonias Murray finished with 251 yards through the air on 22 of 41 passing
and two touchdowns. Alders finished with 103 yards receiving on 10
receptions and one touchdown.
The Knights
finished the season 14-1 and as state runner up for the second time (2002).
They have made the playoffs 12 times and are now 15-12 all-time in the
playoffs.
The attendance at
the 2014 division II football state championship game was 9,570.
Division VII
Maria Stein Marion
Local Captures Fourth-Consecutive State Football Championship, Eighth
All-Time
COLUMBUS, Ohio The
Flyers of Maria Stein Marion Local defeated Norwalk St. Paul 41-0 in the
2014 Division VII state championship on Saturday at Ohio Stadium to earn
their fourth-consecutive OHSAA football state championship and eighth
championship in school history (tied for third all-time). Marion Local
capped off an undefeated season (15-0) with the victory, which also earned
its 37th consecutive victory overall.
The Midwest Athletic
Conference (MAC) has won two 2014 OHSAA football state championships
(Minster defeated Kirtland 46-42 Friday to win the Division VI state
championship). Were
very fortunate to play in our league (Midwest Athletic Conference), said
Marion Local Head Coach Tim Goodwin. We know if were in the top part of
our league, well be very, very competitive in the postseason. With this
senior class here, weve been at the top of the league. Its been really
neat.
Marion Local used
three first quarter touchdowns to give itself a comfortable lead. Two
touchdown runs by senior Jacy Goettemoeller of 49 and 46 yards gave Marion
Local a 14-0 lead with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter. Just over one
minute later, senior quarterback Dustin Rethman found junior receiver Hunter
Wilker for a 33 yard touchdown pass. A one yard touchdown run by Adam
Nietfeld and a second touchdown pass from Rethman to Wilker of 29 yards gave
Marion Local a 35-0 halftime lead.
Jacy Goettemoeller
finished with 160 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns, which broke his
Division VII state championship record for most rushing touchdowns in a game
of two set in 2013. Dustin Rethman finished 14-of-18 with 215 yards, two
touchdowns and one interception. The Marion Local defense held Norwalk St.
Paul to 68 total yards, the fifth fewest total yards allowed in an OHSAA
football state championship game.
With the victory, the
Marion Local senior class capped off an illustrious career with its fourth
consecutive state championship, 56 total wins and finished undefeated in the
playoffs in its four years.
This years team
outscored its five playoff opponents 220-14. Marion Local holds the highest
winning percentage (.866) of all OHSAA football teams in the playoffs, with
an all-time playoff record of 58-9.
In the second year of
the Division VII state championship, 11 team records were broken and four
individual records were broken. Marion Local holds all Division VII team
records and Marion Local players hold all individual Division VII records.
The attendance for
the 2014 Division VII state championship was 7,291. The 2014 OHSAA football
state championships continue Saturday with the Division I state championship
kicking off at 3 p.m. and the Division V state championship beginning at 8
p.m.
Division I
Lakewood St. Edward Wins Second State
Football Title, 48th Team State Championship in School History
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Eagles of Lakewood
St. Edward defeated Huber Heights Wayne 31-21 in the 2014 OHSAA Division I
football state championship game Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. The
victory gives St. Edward its second OHSAA state football championship and
gives the Eagles their 48th team state championship in all OHSAA sports,
placing St. Edward in a first place tie with Cincinnati St. Xavier for most
OHSAA team state championships all-time.
It
was a hard-fought game, said St. Edward head coach Rick Finotti. We just
picked each other up and kept talking about teamwork and bonding, being the
hardened group. I was really proud of how our guys fought.

quarter, senior quarterback Brett Kean led a very methodical 11 play, 35
yard drive capped off by a six yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver
Frank Geib to give the Eagles a 24-14 lead.
A turn of events occurred with 8:50 remaining,
as Wayne senior defensive lineman Robert Landers scored on a 13 yard fumble
recovery, giving the Warriors new life with the score 24-21. St. Edward
would respond, however, using a nine play, 46 yard drive finished off by a
six yard touchdown pass from Kean to Michael OMalley to make it 31-21. The
Eagles defense held and St. Edward went on to win with a final score of
31-21.
Cole Gest finished the game with 158 rushing
yards and one touchdown on 26 carries for St. Edward. Brett Kean was
17-for-31 for 164 yards and two touchdowns and one interception and

Division V
Coldwater Wins Third Consecutive State Title,
