COLUMBUS, Ohio The 2012 OHSAA ice hockey state tournament began
Saturday afternoon at Nationwide Arena with two state powerhouses facing
off. After handing record-setting No. 1 Cleveland St. Ignatius its only
loss of the season last Saturday in the district finals, Lakewood St.
Edward found itself trailing Hunting Valley University School 2-0 after
two periods and relied on an Alex Norton goal in the last two minutes of
regulation to force a sudden-death overtime and win 3-2 in the first
semifinal game of the day.
Much like the previous eight tournament games these two teams played
where they allowed a combined seven total goals, the first period was
dominated by defense and ended in a scoreless tie. However, University
School wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second when
senior assistant captain Connor Judson scored on a power play just 1:16
into the period. He was assisted on the goal by Kevin DeGulis. Preppers
senior captain Matt Wipper then scored another power play goal, with the
assist coming from Judson, 3:13 into the period. The remainder of the
period featured 13 saves recorded by seniors Sam Althans (7- HVUS) and
Logan Galati (6-LSE). Althans and Galati would finish the game with 20
saves apiece.
After the second intermission the Eagles found their offense when senior
Matt Geib found the back of the net 2:50 into the third period of play.
He was assisted on the goal by junior Gabe Lampron and senior
Christopher Hoy. With time running out, Eagles senior Alex Norton
scored the tying goal with 1:19 left in the game to force a sudden death
overtime. With 21.2 remaining on the clock, Lampron sent the Eagles back
to the championship game for the second consecutive year with an
unassisted goal.
University School, which was making its 10th state appearance, finishes
the season 23-10-3. Lakewood St. Edward, the 2011 state runner-up,
returns to the state championship game and will play the winner of
Sylvania Northview and Lewis Center Olentangy Orange, Sunday at 11:00
