Hunting Valley University School Outlasts Dublin
Coffman, 3-2 In Double Overtime
COLUMBUS, Ohio A goal by Hunting Valley
University School senior captain Robert Engoglia assisted by junior Tommy
Nook 54 seconds into the second overtime period sealed a 3-2 win against
Dublin Coffman at the 2016 OHSAA ice hockey state semifinals at Nationwide
Arena on Thursday.
With the victory, University School (26-11-2)
advances to its first ice hockey state championship since 2009 when the
Preppers captured their second state title.
Dublin Coffman (28-9-3) was making its second
appearance at the state ice hockey tournament. Dublin Coffman senior goalie
Grant Powell finished with 38 saves to lead the Shamrocks.
University School outshot Dublin Coffman 41-26,
holding a 22-9 advantage in shots in the third period and both overtime
periods.
Dublin Coffman struck first, as junior Luke
Babner found the back of the net with assists by senior Cameron Fiorita and
senior Michael Aman, taking a 1-0 lead at the 3:33 mark of the first period.
With 47 seconds remaining in the first period,
University School junior Alex Hoyen scored after a shot by senior Zach
Goetsch was deflected to him, tying the game 1-1 at the end of one.
University School carried its momentum into the
second period as junior JD Clemens scored a goal assisted by senior Ryan
Gorbett and senior Goetsch 34 seconds into the period, giving the Preppers a
2-1 lead early in the period.
Later in the second period, Dublin Coffman used
a power-play goal by senior Kyle Talebi assisted by senior Ryon Malas with
4:54 until the break to tie the game 2-2.
After a scoreless third period and first
overtime, University School broke the stalemate 54 seconds into double
overtime as Engoglia scored after a pass from Nook, giving the Preppers the
3-2 victory in dramatic fashion.
The game marked the first overtime game in an
OHSAA ice hockey state tournament since the 2014 OHSAA ice hockey state
championship, which ended in a 1-1 tie between Cleveland St. Ignatius and
Sylvania Northview after seven overtimes. That game prompted new overtime
rules, including going to four-on-four play beginning in the second
overtime.
University School will face the winner of Toledo
St. Francis de Sales (36-1-0) and Cleveland St. Ignatius (36-2-1) Saturday
at 2 p.m. in the 2016 OHSAA ice hockey state championship.

Strong Start Powers Cleveland St. Ignatius Past Toledo
St. Francis deSales, 5-1
COLUMBUS, Ohio Three first period goals were
enough for Cleveland St. Ignatius to set the tone and upset top-ranked
Toledo St. Francis deSales 5-1 in a 2016 OHSAA ice hockey state semifinal
game at Nationwide Arena on Thursday.
St Ignatius (37-2-1) recorded one of its two
loses in the regular season to St. Francis deSales 5-1, but the Wildcats
used strong goalkeeping and defensive play and five goals on 32 shots to
return the favor and defeat the Knights and advance to its fourth state
final.
St. Ignatius is back in the state championship
for the second time in three years, the first time since 2014 when it earned
co-state champion honors after a 1-1 tie after seven overtimes with Sylvania
Northview.
Leading the way for St. Ignatius was junior Seth
Whitney, finishing with two goals on five shots. Senior Zachary Kisel,
senior Aidan Spellacy and junior Cullen Frebes each finished with one goal.
Senior goalkeeper Dylan McKeon recorded 33 saves and allowed only one goal.
Despite outshooting St. Ignatius 34-32, St.
Francis deSales (36-2-0) could not convert its opportunities and dropped its
first game since losing to Bowling Green 3-2 on December 28 and its second
game all season.
In the first period, Spellacy started the
scoring for St. Ignatius with an unassisted goal at the 8:01 mark of the
first period to take a 1-0 lead, then 31 seconds later, Whitney scored on a
goal assisted by senior Jared Stepka to increase the lead to 2-0.
The third goal of the period for St. Ignatius
was scored by Kisel with an assist from Spellacy at the 1:20 mark, giving
St. Ignatius a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. St. Ignatius started
the second period where it left off. Whitney scored his second goal of the
game, unassisted with 11:57 left in the period, increasing the St. Ignatius
advantage to 4-0. A third period goal by Frebes assisted by sophomore Bain
Kurtz and junior Matthew Wiegandt at the 12:07 mark gave St. Ignatius its
largest lead of the game, 5-0.
St. Francis deSales would avoid the shutout on a
power play goal by junior Warren Natyshak assisted by senior Brendan Furry
and senior Matt Vild at the 6:54 mark of the third period to bring the score
to 5-1, but it would not be enough for the Knights, as St. Ignatius went on
to win 5-1.
St. Ignatius will face Hunting Valley University
School (26-11-2) in the 2016 OHSAA ice hockey state championship game on
Saturday at 2 p.m. at Nationwide Arena.

championship, with its most recent appearance coming in 2014 when it was

ended after seven overtimes. This time however, the Wildcats left
Nationwide Arena as outright state champions, capturing their third
state title in seven years and fourth overall.

the 13:57 mark with an assist from Clemens to cut the deficit to 4-2.

and junior Tommy Nook to cut the St. Ignatius lead to 4-3. But

St. Ignatius went on to win 4-3.
St. Ignatius was victorious in all three matchups against University
School in the regular season, winning 3-1, 4-0 and 5-3, but pulled out
its closest win against the Preppers when it mattered most to claim the
state championship.
