COLUMBUS, OhioThe second of two OHSAA state ice hockey semifinal games was decided Saturday afternoon at Nationwide Arena. In the longest state tournament game in history, the third-ranked Eagles of St. Edward scored the game-winner in the fourth overtime period to defeat the seventh-ranked Lancers of Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, 3-2.

After leading 2-0 nearly the entire regulation St. Edward (26-14-3) relinquished two late goals to a resilient Lancers team to send the game into the first of four overtime periods. The Eagles played staunch defense in the overtime periods, finally breaking the deadlock on a goal by senior Clay Jarrell in the fourth-minute of the fourth overtime.

In the first period of regulation, St. Edward had two shots find the back of the net, both coming from the stick of senior Riley Egan, who was assisted by junior Alex Norton on the first goal, with junior Nick Crosby and senior Danny OSullivan helping on the second.

The second period was one dominated by defense for both teams as the Eagles fired 10 shots on goal against the Lancers seven, none of which found their way into the net.

The comeback in regulation for Gilmour began with a goal by junior Joey Lencewicz on an assist from freshman James Forsythe with five minutes remaining in the third period. The goal brought the Lancers within one of St. Edward. Game Statistics

COLUMBUS, Ohio The game was played at 12 oclock noon but everyone in attendance knew it was Knight time, as top-ranked Toledo St. Francis de Sales defeated third-ranked Lakewood St. Edward 2-1 in sudden-victory overtime to claim the 2011 OHSAA hockey state championship Sunday at Nationwide Arena.

St. Francis (34-4-1) jumped out to a quick start, taking an early 1-0 advantage on a Ben Torchia goal 20 seconds into the game, with assists recorded to Nate Opblinger and Connor Frey. St. Edward responded two minutes into the second period, as Danny OSullivan tied the score off an assist from Justin Hoyt.

The remainder of regulation was a defensive struggle between the two juggernauts, as overtime was required to decide the outcome.
