BOYS SOCCER STATE TOURNAMENTS WHAT: 23rd Annual
Boys State Soccer Tournaments
Division I:
Senior Andy Rutledge, junior Jeff Strunk, and senior J.C. Cunningham each scored goals to
lead top-ranked Worthington Thomas Worthington (21-0-2) to a 3-0 victory over Hudson in
the championship game played at Westerville South. Thomas Worthington, which outscored its
23 opponents 77-4 this season, won its other state title in 1991. The last Ohio boys
school to finish with an unbeaten record was Brecksville-Broadview Heights, which posted a
22-0-0 mark in winning the Division I state title in 1993. The Cardinals were a 2-1 winner
over Centerville in the state semifinals as Struck and Rutledge scored goals. Hudson
reached the finals with a 2-0 win over Ashland on goals by seniors Josh Huettich and Derek
White.
Division II:
Kettering Archbishop Alter (17-4-2) won its fourth state championship when it downed Canal
Fulton Northwest, 3-1, in the title match at Hilliard Davidson. Senior Scott Lagedrost
scored the Knights� first two goals and senior Mike Mariscalco added a second-half tally.
Freshman Tom McNertney scored Northwest�s only goal in the contest�s final minute. Alter
reached the finals with a 2-1 win over Ottawa-Glandorf, while Northwest overmatched
Lucasville Valley in the semifinals, 7-2, as senior Jon Parfitt and sophomore Ben McAvinew
each scored two goals. Alter won its other state crowns in 1987, 1988 and 1996.
