State Tournament Recap
Diaz and Upper Arlington repeat in Div. II singles and Div. I
doubles, respectively
HILLIARD, Ohio A pair of 2010 winners repeated as champions and two
new champions were crowned at the 2011 OHSAA boys state tennis
tournament on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Davidson High
School. The tournament site was moved to Hilliard due to construction
being done on The Ohio State Universitys Stickney Tennis Center.
Chris Diaz, a senior from Columbus Bishop Watterson, won the Division II
singles championship, defeating Ian Wagner of Columbus Wellington School
6-1, 6-0. It was the second consecutive singles state title for Diaz
who, for the second year in a row, also won without losing a set in any
of his matches. Diaz was also a Division I doubles champion in 2008 and
a doubles runner-up in 2009.
Also winning a championship for the second year in a row was the
Division I doubles team from Upper Arlington, as senior Billy Weldon and
sophomore Stu Little defeated Miguel Cepeda and Luke Tsai of Mason 6-3,
6-1. The win gives Upper Arlington its state-best 16th doubles
championship. Weldon and Little became only the 10th two-time doubles
champions in OHSAA state tournament history, regardless of division.
In the Division II doubles competition, seniors Lou Konstan and Alex
Aleman of Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy were 6-1, 6-4
victors over John Kidd and Alex Swick of Lima Central Catholic. The win
marks the CVCA duos second Division II doubles state championship in
three years, having also won in 2009. Konstan and Aleman are the 11th
two-time doubles champions in OHSAA State tournament history, regardless
of division.
Toledo St. Johns Jesuit senior Evan Bechtel won the Division I singles
state championship, defeating Zach Mueck of Liberty Township Lakota East
6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Bechtel successfully transitioned into this years
singles tournament pool after competing in the state doubles tournament
in 2010. Mueck, a junior, also finished as Division I runner-up last
year.
