Up State Tennis Tournament
Several players returning to a strong 2010 field
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2010 OHSAA
girls state tennis championships begin Friday at Stickney Tennis
Center at The Ohio State University. The semifinals and finals
matches will take place Saturday at Hilliard Davidson High School.
In Division I singles, 2009 state champion Niki Flower (Sr., Upper
Arlington) returns to defend her title. A field of 15 other players
will try to stop her, including Meghan Buell (Sr., New Albany), who
won a state title in the doubles tournament last year.
Returning doubles partners from Liberty Twp. Lakota East, Carolyn
Pitman (Sr.) and Taylor Holden (So.), are back aiming to return to
the championship match after finishing as runner-up to New Albany
last year. Komal Safdar (Sr., Cincinnati Ursuline), Division I
singles runner-up last year, returns to the tournament in the
doubles format.
The girls Division II singles tournament brings a loaded field back
from 2009. State champion Alyssa Ritchie (Sr., Waynesville) returns
along with runner-up Courtney Earnest (Jr., Lexington), third-place
finisher Rachael Morales (So., Columbus Bishop Hartley) and
fourth-place finisher Kelsey Matthews (Sr., Cincinnati Indian Hill).
The Division II doubles tournament returns with many new faces as
only four doubles teams return, none of whom made it past the second
round.
Play begins 9:00 a.m. Friday at the
Stickney Tennis Center at the Ohio State University.
