Four New Champions Crowned at 37th Annual
Girls State Tennis Tournament
The 2012 OHSAA girls tennis state
tournaments concluded Saturday afternoon after inclement weather forced
play indoors to the Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City.
The Division I singles state championship
match featured two four-time state qualifiers in Cincinnati Mount Notre
Dames Sandy Neihaus (Sr.) and Westlakes Lauren Golick (Sr.). It was
Golicks first state final appearance, after reaching the consolation
match in 2010 and 2011; while Niehaus had reached the finals in each of
the previous two years. Midway through the third set, Neihaus suffered a
match-ending injury and Golick claimed the Div. I singles state
championship crown by an injury retirement, 4-6, 7-5, 5-3 (retire). It
marked the first time Westlake has won a state tennis title. In the
consolation match, 2011 state champion Mehvish Safdar (Jr., Cincinnati
Ursuline Academy) defeated Kings Mills Kings junior Amina Ismail, 6-4,
6-1.
The Division I doubles state tournament was a repeat of the Central
district finals and featured a battle of sister duos from New Albany and
Dublin Jerome. No. 1 seed Cristina (Sr.) and Francesca DiLorenzo (So.,
New Albany) defeated the 2011 state champion and No. 2 seed Sarah Stein
(Sr.) and her new partner Emma Stein (So., Dublin Jerome), 6-2, 4-6,
6-3. New Albanys Cristina DiLorenzo joined the 2012 doubles tournament
after competing in the 2011 Div. I singles state championship and Dublin
Jeromes Sarah Stein finished her career with two runner-up finishes
(2012, 2010) and one state title (2011). In the consolation match the
2011 runner-up pair of Lauren Ghidotti (Jr.) and Katie Shepherd (Sr.,
Columbus Bishop Watterson) defeated Dublin Jeromes Eleanor Bullock
(Fr.) and Caitlyn Merzbacher (So.), 7-5, 6-3.
The Division II singles was also a repeat of the Central district finals
but had a different outcome as No. 2 seed Columbus Bishop Hartleys
Rachael Morales (Jr.) defeated No. 1 seed Columbus St. Francis DeSales
My Linh Li (Sr.), 6-0, 6-2. Morales finished her career with four state
tournament appearances and a championship medal, while Li finished her
career with a first (2009), second (2011) and third place finish (2010).
In the consolation match, the 2011 state champion Rachel Nelson (Sr.,
Millersburg West Holmes) defeated Portsmouth junior Ali Miller, 7-6
(7-5), 6-2, and finished her career with a first (2011), second (2010),
third (2012) and fourth (2009) place finish.
In the Division II doubles tournament, Gahanna Columbus Academy Andrea
Bellinger (So.) and Hannah Wexner (Jr.) defeated Gates Mills Hawkens
Sydney Green (So.) and Emily Leizman (Sr.), 6-2, 6-3. It was Columbus
Academys second state title and first since 2008. In the consolation
match, Natalie Allen (Fr.) and Brooke Sandridge (Sr., Dayton Chaminade
Julienne) defeated Meili Martin (Jr.) and Minda Martin (Fr.,
Chesapeake), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
