2015 Girls Tennis State Tournament Recaps
Division I
The 40th annual OHSAA girls tennis state tournament
concluded Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. 2015
marked the first year for the tournament to be held at the Lindner
Center, and good weather allowed the entire tournament to be played
outdoors on Friday and Saturday.
In Division I singles, Emily Thomas (sophomore, Cincinnati Princeton)
defeated Alexa Abele (senior, Cincinnati Sycamore) 6-1, 6-3 to earn
Princeton�s first girls tennis singles state championship. Thomas was
making her first appearance in the girls tennis state tournament. Alexa
Abele finished third in last year�s state tournament.
Hudson junior Molly Sandberg was victorious in the consolation match
against Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame freshman Kelli Niehaus, winning 6-3,
6-2 to earn third place honors. Sandberg finished as singles state
runner-up in 2014 and was a state quarterfinalist in 2013.
In Division I doubles, sisters Olivia Kompa (senior, Upper Arlington)
and Paige Kompa (freshman, Upper Arlington) earned the sixth doubles
state championship for Upper Arlington, defeating Powell Olentangy
Liberty�s Anna Delaney (senior) and Alexis Steer (sophomore), 6-2, 6-0.
Upper Arlington is tied for third for most girls tennis doubles state
championships in OHSAA history. In 2014, Upper Arlington doubles pair
Audrey Berger and Kyra Jung were Division I doubles state champions.
Upper Arlington�s Kyra Jung (junior) and Anna Reynolds (junior) finished
third after winning the Division II doubles consolation match vs.
Cincinnati Ursuline Academy�s Jenny Duma (senior) and Gabriella O�Connor
(sophomore), 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Duma and O�Connor earned fourth place
honors.
Division II

In Division II singles, Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown junior Lauren
Gillinov earned her second straight singles state championship, coming
away victorious against Lodi Cloverleaf junior Emily Dunbar, 6-7 (8-6),
7-5, 6-0. With the victory, Gillinov becomes the 16th two-time singles
state champion in OHSAA girls tennis state tournament history. Gillinov
was making her third-straight appearance in the girls tennis state
tournament. Lodi Cloverleaf�s Emily Dunbar finished as state runner-up
in her first state tournament appearance.
Gates Mills Gilmour Academy junior Claudia Althans finished third in
Division II singles in her second state tournament appearance, and
Sandusky Perkins junior Olivia Rohrbacher finished fourth in her third
state tournament appearance.
In Division II doubles, Cincinnati Indian Hills� Caroline Andersen
(senior) and Meredith Breda (senior) earned state champion honors after
defeating Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown�s Catherine Areklett (junior)
and Ally Persky (junior), 6-3, 6-4. Andersen and Breda were making their
third appearance in the state tournament and finished third in 2013.
Areklett and Persky finish as state runners-up for the second time (2014
Division II doubles runner-up pair) in their third trip to the state
tournament.
Pepper Pike Orange�s Alissa Nakamoto (junior) and Anjali Kashyap
(junior) won the consolation match vs. Toledo Central Catholic�s
Maverick Delp (freshman) and Sophia Spinazze (sophomore), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Nakamoto was making her third trip to the state tournament and was a
member of the 2013 state champion doubles pair and the 2014 third place
doubles pair. Delp and Spinazze earned fourth place honors in their
first visit to the state tournament.

State Tournament Preview
The 40th annual OHSAA Girls State Tennis Tournament moves to the Lindner
Family Tennis Center for the first time in 2015. Home to the Western and
Southern Open, the Lindner Family Tennis Center provides student-athletes
the opportunity to compete in a professional tennis facility. If inclement
weather is a factor on Friday, play will move indoors to

In Division I singles, six
qualifiers from 2014 return to the field of 16 in 2015, including 2014 state
runner-up Molly Sandberg (junior, Hudson) and 2014
third place finisher Alexa Abele (senior, Cincinnati Sycamore). Four
freshmen qualified for the Division I singles state tournament this year.
The Division I doubles state
tournament features nine returning qualifying competitors from 2014,
including a member of the 2014 Division I doubles state champion pair, Upper
Arlington junior Kyra Jung. All other returning qualifiers from 2014 did not
advance past state quarterfinal competition.
Seven competitors from the 2014
Division II singles state tournament return in 2015. 2014 Division II
singles state champion, Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown�s Lauren Gillinov
(junior), will look to become the 16th two-time singles state champion in
OHSAA girls tennis state tournament history. 2014 state-runner up Olivia
Rohrbacher (junior, Sandusky Perkins) and fourth place finisher Claudia
Althans (junior, Gates Mills Gilmour Academy) also return to the Division II
singles state tournament field.
The Division II doubles state
tournament features six returning qualifiers from 2014. Pepper Pike Orange�s
Alissa Nakamoto returns to the tournament in 2015 after helping Orange
capture its third doubles state championship in 2013 and finishing third in
2014. Last year�s state runner-up pair, Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown�s
Catherine Areklett (junior) and Ally Persky (junior), also return to the
field of competitors.
