Fort Loramie Captures First Volleyball State
Championship
Redskins hand No. 1 McComb first loss of the
season
DAYTON, Ohio � In its first trip to the
volleyball state tournament, ninth-ranked Fort Loramie toppled previously
undefeated and top-ranked McComb 3-1 (25-15, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22) to win the
OHSAA Division IV state championship Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center
at Wright State University.
With eight seniors, Fort Loramie (25-5) took
advantage of attack errors by McComb (29-1) in the first set and rode the
momentum to the four-set victory. With no seniors, McComb hit -.026 in the
first set (six kills and seven errors in 39 attempts) and .104 in the match
Senior Ashley Pleiman and sophomore Caleigh
Barhorst led Fort Loramie with 16 kills each and senior Kelly Turner had 15
kills. Senior Hallie Benanzer collected 49 assists, which is a new state
tournament record for assists in four-set match.
McComb, 58-2 the last two seasons with trips to
the state tournament, was led by junior Jenna Huffman with 16 kills.
Division III
Huron Takes Home Fourth Title with 3-1 Win over
Gilmour Academy

DAYTON, Ohio � A dominant hitting performance in
the fourth set clinched the OHSAA Division III volleyball state championship
for Huron, 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 17-25, 25-21) over Gates Mills Gilmour Academy
Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University.
Playing in the state tournament for the seventh
time since 1999, ninth-ranked Huron (25-4) takes home its fourth
championship (2014, 2009, 2002, 1999). The Tigers hit .276 (12 kills in 29
attempts with only four errors) in the deciding fourth set.
Second-ranked Gilmour Academy (26-3) was in the
state tournament for the sixth time since 2007 and is the state runner-up
for the fifth time.
Huron was led by senior Hannah Cantrill with 17
kills, four aces and 13 digs. Senior Jacqui Mullins added 11 kills, while
sophomore Gabriella Wood had 25 assists and 14 digs.
Junior Alexa Turk had 13 kills and 17 digs for
Gilmour Academy and senior Megan Polak totaled 31 assists.

Chardon NDCL Tops
Bishop Hartley to Earn First State Title
DAYTON, Ohio � In its first appearance in the
volleyball state tournament, fifth-ranked Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin
(25-4) collected a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 25-18) win over second-ranked
Columbus Bishop Hartley (24-5) in the OHSAA Division II state championship
Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University.
NDCL senior Stephanie Williams had 25 kills and
17 digs, while junior Ambre Pierce posted 13 kills to lead the Lions fifth
overall state championship. Sophomore Emily Weigand had 45 assists.
NDCL collected 10 blocks, compared to two for
Hartley, and held Hartley to a .124 hitting percentage. There were 15 ties
or lead changes in the pivotal third set that the Lions won 25-23 to take a
2-1 lead.
Hartley was making its fifth appearance in the
state tournament and now has two runner-up finishes (2014 and 2007) to go
with one state championship (2011). The Hawks were led by senior Shelby
Chesko with 18 kills, while senior Emily Rahe had 43 assists and 24 digs.

Cincinnati Mount Notre
Dame Dominates Massillon Jackson for Eighth Title
Cougars tie OHSAA record with eighth
volleyball title
DAYTON, Ohio � For the record-tying eighth time,
Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame took home the OHSAA Division I volleyball state
championship as the Cougars beat Massillon Jackson 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18)
Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University.
Mount Notre Dame is now tied with Cincinnati St.
Ursula Academy and Newark Catholic with eight volleyball state
championships. St. Ursula last won a title in 2003 and Newark Catholic�s
last title was in 2004. MND has won titles in 2014, 2013, 2011, 2006, 2000,
1999, 1998 and 1995.
In the state tournament for the 12th time,
second-ranked MND (27-2) beat previously undefeated and top-ranked Toledo
St. Ursula Academy in the state semifinals Friday. In its second trip to the
final four, Jackson was ranked fifth and ends its season 27-3 and state
runner-up for the second time (2012).
The Cougars hit .292 in the match and had 10
service aces. They were led by junior Dani Szczepanski with 17 kills, while
junior Sydney Mukes had 11 kills. Senior Jessica Towle had 36 assists.
2014 OHSAA Volleyball State Tournament Preview
The OHSAA volleyball state tournament
celebrates its 40th year in 2014 and the event returns to the Ervin J.
Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University. This is the 24th
year for the tournament being played at the Nutter Center and SportsTime
Ohio will once again broadcast the championship games. The divisional
rotation for this year�s state tournament is IV, III, II and then I.
Semifinals in Division IV
will begin the state tournament Thursday at noon. Division IV OHSVCA (Ohio
High School Volleyball Coaches Association) poll champion McComb (27-0) will
look to win its first volleyball state championship after being a state
semifinalist in 2013. Its state semifinal matchup will be against Newark
Catholic (25-1), which is aiming for a state-record ninth overall OHSAA
volleyball state title. The second Division IV state semifinal on Thursday
at 2 p.m. will feature 2013 Division IV state runner-up Cleveland Villa
Angela-St. Joseph (20-7) and first time OHSAA volleyball state semifinalist,
Fort Loramie (23-5).
The first Division III
state semifinal on Thursday at 4 p.m. is a rematch of the 2013 Division III
state championship game. 2014 Division III coaches poll champion Versailles
(26-1) will look to capture its second straight volleyball state
championship, while second-ranked Gates Mills Gilmour Academy (25-2) will
look to avenge its loss in 2013 and get back to the state finals. Three-time
state champion Huron (23-4) will take on two-time state champion Frankfort
Adena (23-4) in the second Division III state semifinal on Thursday at 6
p.m.
Division II will begin
Friday�s action as fifth ranked Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (23-4)
will face 2013 Division II state champion Parma Padua Franciscan (21-5).
This game will be played Friday at noon. 2011 Division II state champion
Columbus Bishop Hartley (23-4) will look to win its second volleyball state
championship as it faces three-time state champ and 2013 state runner-up
Kettering Archbishop Alter (21-6) Friday at 2 p.m.
Three of the four 2013
Division I volleyball state semifinalists return to the 2014 state
tournament. Columbus St. Francis DeSales (20-3) makes its third straight
trip Dayton and will take on 2012 Division I state runner-up Massillon
Jackson (26-2) on Friday at 4 p.m. The second Division I state semifinal is
a rematch of the 2013 Division I state championship, as 2013 Division I
state champion and second ranked Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame (25-2) plays 2013
Division I state runner-up and top ranked Toledo St. Ursula Academy (28-0),
Friday at 6 p.m.
All state championship
games will be played Saturday, November 8, with Division IV scheduled for 11
a.m., Division III at 1 p.m., Division II at 3 p.m. and Division I at 5 p.m.
