OHSAA Releases Football Regional Semifinal Pairings
All games are Friday at 7:30 p.m.; all-session tickets for the state championships are now on sale
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The football playoff field has been cut in half, as 112 schools have advanced past the first round to the OHSAA regional semifinals. After the top four seeds in each region hosted games last Friday, the OHSAA now determines neutral sites for next three rounds, leading up to the state championship games at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
Media Note: A separate release containing information for this week’s volleyball and soccer state tournaments will be issued Sunday evening.
Welcome to the Regional Semifinals
The regionals semifinals and next week’s regional finals follow bracket format determined by the final computer ratings. The OHSAA will then determine state semifinal pairings, followed by the state championships Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
Last Friday night, home teams (higher seeds) went 83-29 (see later note) and 26 of the 33 undefeated teams advanced. Of the five teams that qualified for the playoffs for the first time, two have advanced to the second round, including Middletown Madison (Div. V, Region 20) and Chillicothe Southeastern (Div. VI, Region 23). Not only did Middle town Madison and Chillicothe Southeastern win their school’s first football playoff game, so did Hilliard Bradley (Div. I, Region 3), Barberton (Div. II, Region 5), East Canton (Div. VII, Region 25) and Portsmouth Sciotoville (Div. VII, Region 27).
Of the 18 teams that won their final regular season to jump into the Top 8 of their region and qualify for the playoffs, three have advanced to the second round, including New Richmond (Div. III, Region 12), Bellevue (Div. IV, Region 14) and Jeromesville Hillsdale (Div. VI, Region 22).
All Playoff Games on Friday Nights in 2017
New this year, all football playoff games during the first four rounds of the playoffs will be on Friday nights. The OHSAA made the change due to declining attendance for Saturday playoff games and more playoff sites being available on Fridays compared to Saturdays, when college football night games often cause sites to have a shortage of workers.
Ticket Information
Fans are encouraged to buy their playoff tickets in advance at the participating schools, which keep a percentage of the revenue. For regional playoff games, tickets are $8 presale and $9 at the gate. All-session tickets for the state championship games are now on sale, which includes a ticket option that has indoor access in the stadium club level. Parking passes are not sold. Access to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is included with some ticket packages. Please visit the football page at OHSAA.org for details and the online ticket purchase link, or:
