Title in Three Years
Irish defeat Thurgood Marshall 57-46 for OHSAA Division II State
Championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Unranked Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary took its
first lead with a little under three minutes to go in the first quarter
and never relinquished it, cruising to a 57-46 win over Dayton Thurgood
Marshall in the 2011 OHSAA Division II boys basketball state
championship Saturday at Value City Arena.
Both teams started slow out of the gate, as St. Vincent-St. Mary and
Thurgood Marshall shot 39 percent and 25 percent, respectively, from the
field in the first quarter. St. Vincent-St. Mary was able to get things
going as the game progressed, however, as the Irish finished the game
with a 47 percent field goal percentage. Thurgood Marshall struggled
throughout, only connecting on 31 percent of its shots. This included a
1-of-19 mark from behind the arc.
St. Vincent-St. Mary (19-9) was paced by Lorenzo Cugini, who recorded a
double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Davonte Beard also
contributed 13 points. The win gives the Irish their sixth boys
basketball state championship in school history and second in three
years. These two teams also met in the 2009 Division II state finals,
with Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary coming out on top 59-53.
Unranked Thurgood Marshall (22-6) was led by Jordan Watson, who tallied
16 points and six rebounds.

Hawks Fly Away with OHSAA Division IV State Title
Berlin Hiland defeats Harvest Prep 63-48 to capture school�s second
championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Second-ranked Berlin Hiland pulled away late to
secure a 63-48 victory over Canal Winchester Harvest Preparatory and
claim the 2011 OHSAA Division IV boys basketball state championship
Saturday in Value City Arena.
It was a back-and-forth game for the majority of regulation, with the
two teams exchanging the lead eight times. Neither team led by more than
six points for the first three quarters of the game, but Hiland used a
fourth quarter surge, outscoring Harvest Prep 26 to 11 in the final
period to run away with the double-digit win.
Hiland (27-1) was paced by Seger Bonifant, who tallied 21 points and
seven rebounds. First-team All-Ohioan Dylan Kauffman added 19 points and
eight rebounds and Jalen Miller contributed 13 points and six rebounds
for the Hawks.
The win gives Hiland its second boys basketball state championship in
school history, with the previous title taking place in 1992.
Harvest Prep (22-6) was led by second-team All-Ohioan Shakir Dunning,
who scored 17 points for the Warriors. It was Harvest Prep�s second
appearance in the Division IV state championship game, also finishing as
runner-up in 2007.

Cincinnati Taft Proves No.1 Ranking, Wins
First Title
Taft defeats Cleveland Central Catholic 95-52 in OHSAA Division III

COLUMBUS, Ohio � No. 1 ranked
Cincinnati Taft set Division III state championship game records for
most points in a game and in a quarter and tied the largest margin of
victory in any division en route to defeating unranked Cleveland Central
Catholic 95-52 and win the OHSAA boys Division III basketball
championship Saturday evening at Value City Arena.
Taft (25-1) shot 54 percent from the field
in the game and had three players score in double figures. The Senators
were led by junior Adolphus Washington with 18 points and eight
rebounds, junior Jalen Lowe scored 15 points and senior Chris Lowe added
12 points in nine minutes. Junior Orlando Berry directed the Taft
offense and defense all game ending with nine points, six rebounds, six
assists and two steals.
Cleveland Central Catholic was led by senior
Anton Grady with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Finishing with a
record of 19-9, the Ironmen became state runner-up for the first time in
school history. Cleveland Central Catholic had previously won the title
in 2009.
Taft finishes its championship season with
25 wins, never losing to a team from the state of Ohio. The Senators go
home with their first basketball state championship in their first trip
to the state tournament.

LaSalle Brings Second Title Back to
Cincinnati
Cincinnati LaSalle defeats Columbus Northland 59-40 to win Division
I championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Third-ranked
Cincinnati LaSalle defeated second-ranked Columbus Northland 59-40 in a
hard-fought boys Division I state basketball championship game Saturday
night in Value City Arena.
LaSalle (26-2) was led by a well-balanced offense and tenacious defense
in the second half, holding Northland to only 18 points after the
intermission. The Lancers forced 15 turnovers and totaled three blocks
and seven steals throughout the contest. LaSalle was paced by senior
Brandon Neel, who led all scorers with 22 points. Neel also tallied six
rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals. Senior Ryan Fleming
contributed with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a
steal.
Northland was led by senior Trey Burke who
totaled 10 points, four assists and two steals. The Vikings had nine
players record a goal throughout the four quarters of play. Northland
finishes the season with a 26-2 record and its first state runner-up
trophy. The Vikings had previously won the Division I championship in
2009.
LaSalle completes the season with 26 wins
and two losses and as state champion for the second time in school
history. The Lancers have now been to the state final four five times,
and had previously won the Division I title in 1996.
