Division II
Norwalk captures first boys basketball
state title with 65-58 win over Bishop Watterson
COLUMBUS, Ohio For the first time in school history, the Truckers of
Norwalk are boys basketball state champions after defeating Columbus
Bishop Watterson 65-58 in the OHSAA Division II boys basketball state
championship on Saturday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Bishop
Watterson was seeking to become back-to-back boys basketball state
champions but could not overcome Norwalks 47.5 percent shooting effort
and a game high 29 points by Norwalk senior Ben Haraway.
The Truckers set the pace early, going on an 8-3 run to begin the game.
Bishop Watterson would respond, going on an 11-4 run of its own to take
a 14-12 lead midway through the first quarter. An alley-oop to Norwalk
senior Jeff Thomas would spark an 8-2 run for Norwalk to end the
quarter, giving the Truckers a 20-14 lead at the end of the first
quarter. Another 8-2 run to begin the second quarter gave the Truckers a
28-16 lead, and they would go into the locker-room with a 31-19 halftime
advantage, and would not trail at any point in the second half.
Norwalk maintained a 42-33 lead at the end of the third quarter, but
would see its lead cut to five in the fourth quarter after a
three-pointer by Bishop Watterson senior Matt Hughes made it 50-45 with
3:19 remaining. Norwalk senior Jeff Thomas, who led the Truckers in
scoring during the regular season with 19 points per game, scored the
next four points to give Norwalk a 54-45 lead. The Truckers never looked
back and held off a 25 point fourth quarter by Bishop Watterson to win
65-58, and capture the first boys basketball state championship in
Norwalk school history.
Norwalk seniors Ben Haraway and Jeff Thomas led the way, with Haraway
finishing with 29 points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocks,
and Thomas finishing with 18 points on 8-14 shooting and a team-high 10
rebounds. Bishop Watterson was led by second-team All-Ohio senior Matt
Hughes, who scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior Cody
Calhoun finished with 15 points. Watterson was in the Division II state
championship game for the second consecutive year. The Eagles defeated
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary for the state title in 2013 and defeated the
Irish in Thursdays state semifinal.
The attendance for the game was 14,642.
Division IV
Convoy Crestview uses third quarter surge
to win Division IV state championship and finish undefeated
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The AP number one ranked Knights of Convoy Crestview
outscored Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas 20-3 in the third quarter and
won its first OHSAA boys basketball state championship in school history
by a final score of 71-44 on Saturday afternoon. Crestviews only other
boys basketball state championship game appearance was in 2003, and 11
years later the Knights returned to Columbus to win their first boys
basketball state championship and become the first Division IV team
since New Knoxville in 2008 to finish undefeated.
Crestview held a 26-23 advantage at halftime as St. Thomas Aquinas
stayed close, shooting 57.1 percent from the three-point line and 50
percent overall in the first half. Crestview took control in the third
quarter, going on an 18-0 run to begin the quarter and ending the third
quarter with a 46-26 lead. Crestview maintained its lead in the fourth,
and won by a final score of 71-44.
Four Crestview players scored in double figures and the Knights shot
59.5 percent for the game. Senior Damian Helm led the way with 20 points
and senior Tyson Bolenbaugh added 18 points and eight rebounds for
Crestview. St. Thomas Aquinas was led in scoring by junior Anthony
Moeglin, who scored 10 points.
St. Thomas Aquinas finished the regular season 11-11, and won seven
games in a row to reach the Division IV state championship. It was the
first boys basketball state championship game appearance for St. Thomas
Aquinas and its first boys basketball final four appearance since 1975.
St. Thomas Aquinas is the first team with 11 loses to reach a state
championship game since Dayton Jefferson in 1987.
The attendance for the game was 11,556.
Division III
Lima Central Catholic wins second boys
basketball state championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio The OHSAA Division III state championship was won in
thrilling fashion by Lima Central Catholic on Saturday by a final score
of 64-62 vs. Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph. With the victory, Lima
Central Catholic finishes the season 24-4 and earns its second boys
basketball state championship as a school (2010).
The Thunderbirds of LCC began the game on a 14-4 run, with senior
Martyce Kimbrough scoring eight early points. By halftime Kimbrough had
18 points, which led all scorers at the break, and the Thunderbirds took
a 34-25 advantage into the locker room. Lima Central Catholic maintained
its third quarter lead and a three-pointer at the third quarter buzzer
by senior Cory Stewart gave the Thunderbirds a 49-41 lead going into the
fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Villa Angela-St. Joseph cut the deficit to just
four after a three-point play by Dererk Pardon made it 51-47. The game
was closely contested the rest of the way. A three-pointer by Villa
Angela-St. Joseph junior Carlton Bragg brought the Vikings within one
point, with the score at 63-62 with 4.1 seconds. A made free throw and a
missed last second shot by Villa Angela-St. Joseph sealed the victory
for Lima Central Catholic.
Despite being outrebounded 33-24, Lima Central Catholic was able to hold
off the rally by the Vikings and win their second boys basketball state
championship. LCC senior Martyce Kimbrough led the Thunderbirds,
finishing with 22 points on 7-11 shooting. Sophomore Xavier Simpson
pitched in 18 points on 7-12 shooting. For VASJ, junior Carlton Bragg
led the way with 23 points. Derek Pardon scored 17 points, and Brian
Parker added 15 points for the Vikings. Villa Angela-St. Joseph made its
second state championship appearance after winning the 2013 Division IV
state championship vs. Leipsic.
Division I
Lakewood St. Edward wins Division
I state championship in overtime
COLUMBUS, Ohio A three-pointer by Lakewood St. Edward senior Marsalis
Hamilton at the fourth quarter buzzer forced overtime and the Eagles of
St. Edward went on to win their second boys basketball state
championship, defeating the Golden Bears of Upper Arlington 62-58 in
overtime. The Eagles made their eighth final four appearance in school
history in 2014 and walked away with a state championship for the first
time since 1998 and the second time overall.
Upper Arlington began the game on a 9-0 run, but St. Edward proceeded to
go on a 10-2 run to close the quarter and cut the Upper Arlington lead
to 11-10 at the end of the first. The game stayed close throughout, with
Upper Arlington leading 22-20 at halftime. A three pointer at the end of
the third quarter buzzer gave the Golden Bears a 40-37 lead going into
the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 42, back-to-back threes by
Upper Arlington gave the Golden Bears a 48-42 lead. St. Edward
countered, as sophomore Derek Funderburk scored on a three-point play to
cut the Upper Arlington lead to 48-45 with 1:53 remaining. Upper
Arlington held a 52-49 advantage with just 4.1 seconds remaining, but
Hamiltons three pointer at the buzzer forced overtime and the Eagles
were able to hold off the Golden Bears to earn the 62-58 victory.
St. Edward junior Kipper Nichols scored a game-high 26 points on 11-15
shooting and also led his team with five rebounds. Hamilton scored the
final three points of regulation and scored 11 points overall. Upper
Arlington was led by seniors Danny Hummer and Kevin Vannatta who each
scored a team-high 15 points. The Golden Bears made their first state
tournament appearance since 1939 and are state runner-up for the first
time in school history.
Total Attendance for the game was 14,234 and the total state tournament
attendance was 129,122.
