OHSAA Extends Football Finals Contract with Stark County Through 2011

Association picks up options for 2010 and 2011 championships in Massillon and Canton

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors today voted to pick up both option years on its contract with the Canton/Stark County Convention and Visitors Bureau to host the state football finals in Massillon and Canton in 2010 and 2011. The 2009 finals will mark the last in a three-year contract that included the two option years approved Thursday.

The 9-0 vote took place at the Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the OHSAA central office in Columbus. The contract will come up for bid again in the spring of 2010. The finals have been held exclusively in Stark County since 1991.

“The Board of Directors, upon evaluation of the state football championships, is pleased to approve the option years of 2010 and 2011 to remain in Canton and Massillon,” Mike Richards, OHSAA Board President, said. “The hospitality extended to our participating schools and their fans by these hosts truly make for an outstanding experience.”

The six championship games will continue to rotate between Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium (capacity 16,392) and Canton Fawcett Stadium (capacity 22,360). The two stadiums, which both have artificial turf and are less than 12 miles apart, have evenly split the six championship games since 2000.

“We are thrilled that the Board of Directors has taken the opportunity to exercise the two option years on our contract with Stark County,” said Dan Ross, OHSAA commissioner. “Anyone who has been to Canton and Massillon knows what a special weekend it is and we are excited to remain there through 2011.”

The 2009 football finals are scheduled for Dec. 4-5 and will be held the first weekend of December in both 2010 and 2011.
