Gilmour Academys Andrew Bieber becomes 16th two-time medalist
SUNBURY, Ohio The 2012 OHSAA boys
Division III state golf tournament concluded Saturday afternoon at NorthStar
Golf Resort (Par 72, 7,001 yards) in Sunbury. Ashland Crestview held off
defending champion Columbus Wellington School and Gahanna Columbus Academy
to win its first boys golf state championship.
The Crestview team shot a consistent, 323-323

junior Josh Brooks, 77-74 151 and sophomore Bryce Lutz, 75-78 153.
Columbus Wellingtons bid for back-to-back
championships came up short by five strokes, coming in a tie for second with
Gahanna Columbus Academy. The Jaguars were led by senior Quinten Hendricks,

Gates Mills Gilmour Academy senior Andrew Bieber
claimed medalist honors for the second year in a row. Bieber shot an
impressive even-par score over two days, posting rounds of 73-71 144. By
earning the medalist honors, Bieber became only the 16th golfer in boys
state tournament history to medal twice or more. He also makes Gilmour
Academy the first school to have multiple two-time medalists. Biebers
former teammate Alex Andrews accomplished the feat in 2009 and 2010.
Josh Brooks of Crestview and Grove City
Christian School junior Cameron Michalak both earned runner-up medalist by
shooting a two-day score of 151.

Dublin Jerome Wins Second Consecutive State Title
Celtics win by one stroke over
runner-up Medina Highland
COLUMBUS, Ohio Dublin Jerome won
the 2012 OHSAA girls Division I state golf tournament by a stroke over
Medina Highland on the Gray Course (Par 70, approximately 5,800 yards)
at The Ohio University State Golf Club in Columbus to win its second
consecutive state championship.
Despite Highland, 311-319-630, getting the
top performance of the weekend from senior Jessica Porvasnik, Jerome was
able to fend off the Hornets completing the weekend sweep for Dublin
Jerome (313-316-629). The boys won their fifth state championship by a
stroke over Centerville.
It marks the third time Jerome has swept the
girls and boys Division I golf state championships, the only school to
have done so. The Celtics accomplished the feat in 2005, 2011 and 2012.
The Celtic girls were led by junior Lexie
Toth, 71-78-149 and sophomore Maite Erana, 76-76-152.
Highlands Porvasnik earned the medalist honors shooting even par,
68-72-140. Her first day 68 is the lowest one-round score in the girls

Dublin Jerome Wins Back-to-Back State Golf
Championships
Celtics win by one stroke over
runner-up Centerville
COLUMBUS, Ohio Dublin Jerome won the
2012 OHSAA boys Division I state golf tournament by a stroke over
Centerville to win its second-consecutive state championship.
The Scarlet Course (Par 71, approximately 7,115
yards) at The Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus provided a tough
test throughout the weekend with golfers facing wet fairways and higher
winds on Saturday.
With the tournament winding down and every
stroke becoming crucial, Jerome relied on its senior golfers Mert Selamet,
73-80-153 and Chad Howard, 79-78-157 to win it fifth overall golf state
championship. The 2012 title marks the second time the Celtics, 307-323-630,
have won back-to-back state championships. They had previously done so in
2004 and 2005.
The win also completed a weekend sweep for
Jerome, with the girls winning their third state championship. It marks the
third time Jerome has swept the Division I golf state championships, the
only school to have done so. The Celtics accomplished the feat in 2005, 2011
and 2012.
Centerville came up one stroke short of winning
its first state championship. The Elks were led by seniors Ryan Wenzler,
75-79-154 and Caleb Wolters, 76-81-157.
Dublin Coffman junior Nick Sparling earned the
medalist honors shooting 74-71-145. Sparlings score of 71 on Saturday was
the lowest round of the two-day tournament.
