Annual State Tournaments, Dublin Coffman High School, March 3 and 4
Brecksville-Broadview Heights won its second state title when it edged four-time
defending champion Rocky River Magnificat, 144.000 to 143.975. Magnificat had also
captured eight of the previous 10 championships. Worthington Kilbourne was third
with 142.575 and Dublin Coffman fourth with 142.475. After Magnificat completed its final
event on the uneven parallel bars, the meet came down to Brecksville-Broadview Heights'
performances on the floor exercise and the team earned enough points to capture its first
title since 1994.
In Saturdays individual and all around competition, Grafton Midview senior
Calli Ryals placed first or tied for first in every event and took the all around title
with 38.050 points. She tied for first with Columbus St. Francis DeSales freshman
Jillian Stranges in the vault and was first by herself in the uneven parallel bars,
balance beam and floor exercise. Ryals was also the all around and floor exercise
champion in 1998 but did not compete in high school gymnastics last year.
