Toledo St. Francis de Sales defeats Hunting Valley University School 7-1; advances to third state championship game

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio � The Knights of Toledo St. Francis de Sales advanced to their third OHSAA ice hockey state championship by defeating Hunting Valley University School, 7-1 in a state semifinal game Thursday at Nationwide Arena. St. Francis de Sales defeated Lakewood St. Edward 2-1 in the 2011 OHSAA ice hockey state championship game and earned state runner-up in 1988.

 

The Knights used three first period goals to take a 3-0 advantage. A goal by junior Matt Vild 1:27 into the second period pushed the lead to 4-0. University School got on the scoreboard at the 4:34 mark in the second period with a goal by junior Robert Engoglia to cut the deficit to 4-1. A St. Francis de Sales goal with 4:26 left in the second period by junior Brendan Furry pushed the lead to 5-1, and the Knights never looked back, scoring two third period goals to seal their birth in the state championship with a 7-1 victory.

 

St. Francis de Sales will seek to win its second all-time ice hockey state championship and first since 2011. Hunting Valley University School was making its 11th appearance in the state tournament.

Lakewood St. Edward Advances to 17th State Ice Hockey Championship, Defeats Dublin Jerome 2-0

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio � Lakewood St. Edward defeated Dublin Jerome 2-0 in an OHSAA ice hockey state semifinal game Thursday at Nationwide Arena to advance to its 17th state championship and third since 2011. Two first period goals by the Eagles were enough to propel them to the state final.

 

St. Edward found the back of the net 52 seconds into the first period as Colin Price scored a goal, assisted by A.J. Gonnella to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Eagles scored again at the 5:54 mark in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Stephen O�Sullivan scored the goal, assisted by Jason Steckle and Ryan Rockwell.

 

St. Edward junior goalie Warren Hill recorded 29 saves and held Dublin Jerome scoreless for the second time this season. Jerome was making its first trip to the OHSAA state ice hockey tournament.

 

The state championship game will be Saturday at 2 p.m. Lakewood St. Edward will face Toledo St. Francis de Sales, a rematch of the 2011 state championship game. St. Francis de Sales defeated St. Edward 2-1 in 2011 to win its first state ice hockey championship.

Toledo St. Francis de Sales Defeats Lakewood St. Edward 3-1 To Win Second Ice Hockey State Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Toledo St. Francis de Sales defeated Lakewood St. Edward 3-1 in the 2015 OHSAA ice hockey state championship game Saturday at Nationwide Arena. The victory earned the Knights their second ice hockey state championship in school history. St. Francis de Sales� first state championship came in 2011, also against Lakewood St. Edward.

St. Francis de Sales� first goal was scored by junior Jay Denman and assisted by junior Kyle Bloom, 3:25 into the first period. The Knights struck again 8:25 into the first period with a goal by freshman Matt Barrow, assisted by junior Mike White.

After both teams went scoreless in the second period, St. Edward scored its first and only goal 2:30 into the third period. Freshman Colin Price found the back of the net and was assisted by senior captains Collin Mitchell and Alex Sabitsch. The Eagles pulled their goalie in the final minute in an attempt to score and tie the game at 2-2, but a solid defensive effort from St. Francis de Sales and subsequent goal with 31.6 seconds left by Mike White, assisted by Kyle Bloom, pushed the St. Francis de Sales lead to 3-1 and sealed the victory.

St. Francis de Sales took 41 shots compared to 24 for St. Edward. The Knights outshot the Eagles 27-13 in the second and third periods and also won 24 face-offs compared to six for Lakewood St. Edward.

The Knights were making their eighth ice hockey state tournament appearance. Lakewood St. Edward earned its sixth state runner-up trophy in school history and has won eleven ice hockey state championships, most all-time.

The attendance for the game was 1,804.
