Upper Arlington Wins Seventh-Consecutive OHSAA Girls Division I Swimming Championship
Golden Bears score 286 points to bring home eighth title in program history

CANTON, Ohio � Columbus Upper Arlington scored 286 points en route to capturing the 2011 OHSAA Division I girls swimming state championship Saturday night in C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. The victory was UA�s eighth girls state championship in program history and the seventh consecutive title.

The Golden Bears tallied four first places finishes, including the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay, as well as senior Abby Chin winning both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Cincinnati Ursuline Academy finished in second place with 212 points, with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. It marks the 12th time that Ursuline finished as Division I runner-up.

Maddie Martin of Pickerington Central was named the girls Swimmer of the Meet, as she broke the state record, state tournament record and pool record by repeating as the state champion in the 100 butterfly.

Gates Mills Hawken Scores 334 Points to Win 2011 OHSAA Division II Girls Swimming Crown
Gives School 13th straight championship and 21 overall

CANTON, Ohio � Gates Mills Hawken broke three state tournament records and one state record en route to tallying 334 points and capturing the 2011 OHSAA Division II girls state swimming title Friday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The win gives the Hawks their 13th straight state championship in a row, having finished in first place every year since girls swimming added Division II in the 1999-2000 school year. The win gives the school its 20th girls swimming title in program history.

The Hawks recorded first place finishes in eight events. Individual top finishers included junior Morgan Cohara in the 200 freestyle, sophomore Sarah Koucheki, who won the 100 butterfly for the second year in a row (state tournament record 55.22) and the 200 individual medley, and sophomore Marissa Cominelli in the 100 backstroke (state record 55.49). Hawken also finished first in the 200 medley relay (state tournament record 1:45.72), 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay (state tournament record 3:28.56).

Granville finished in second place with 171 points, including a first place finish by freshman Sydney King in the 500 freestyle.

Walsh Jesuit sophomore Danielle Margheret was named the girls Swimmer of the Meet, with a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Cincinnati St. Xavier Captures OHSAA Boys Division I Swimming Championship
Bombers� depth earns school�s record 32nd state title

CANTON, Ohio � Cincinnati St. Xavier held off a valiant effort by Toledo St. Francis de Sales to win the 2011 OHSAA Division I boys swimming championship Saturday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. It was St. Xavier�s third-consecutive state title, and a record 32nd title overall in program history.

St. Xavier displayed its great depth by scoring 312 points despite not recording first place finishes in any events. Rather, the Bombers earned an abundance of points by having multiple placers in five individual events: the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.

St. Francis de Sales scored 298.5 points as the Division I runner-up, including five first place finishes. Individual top finishers included senior Michael DiSalle in the 200 freestyle and senior Rowan Williams in the 500 freestyle. The Knights also topped the list in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Steven Zimmerman of Morrow Little Miami was named the boys Swimmer of the Meet, after he repeated as state champion in the 100 backstroke.
 

 


 

OHSAA Boys Division II State Swimming & Diving Tournament Recap
 

Hunting Valley University School Wins 2011 OHSAA Division II Boys State Swimming Championship
Preppers score 377 points to win third title in a row

CANTON, Ohio � Hunting Valley University School put 377 points on the board to comfortably win the 2011 OHSAA Division II boys swimming championship Friday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. The win gives University School its third consecutive state championship and third title in program history.

The Preppers finished first in six events. Senior Andrew Malone won the 50 freestyle in 20.50 and the 100 breaststroke in 55.54, setting new state tournament records in both. Senior Mike Gaudiani won the 500 freestyle in 4:33.40. University School also finished first in the 200 medley relay (state tournament record 1:31.67), 200 freestyle relay (state tournament record 1:24.64) and the 400 freestyle relay.

Malone earned boys Swimmer of the Meet honors for his two record-setting performances, as well as his contributions on the Preppers� 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Cincinnati Wyoming finished in second place with 191 points.
