2012 State Tournament Recap

COLUMBUS, Ohio The 2012 OHSAA boys state tennis tournament crowned four new champions on a bright, sunny afternoon at the OSU Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts, Saturday, May 26.

Colton Buffington, a senior from Westlake, defeated Liberty Township Lakota Easts Zach Mueck, 6-2, 6-3, to claim the Division I singles state championship. It was the first state tennis title for Westlake. Mueck, a senior, finishes as the Division I singles runner-up for the third consecutive year. In the consolation bracket, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuits Aaron Sandberg (So.) defeated Perrysburgs Jeffrey Schorsch (Jr.), 6-2, 6-1.

In the Division I doubles bracket, 2011 runner-up Masons Miguel Cepeda (Jr.) and Luke Tsai (So.) made it back to the championship match for the second consecutive year and defeated Cincinnati Sycamores Yuri Karev (Jr.) and Nakul Narendran (Fr.), 6-1, 6-1, to claim their schools first state tennis title. The consolation match featured the other Cincinnati Sycamore team of Dylan Stern (Jr.) and Nikhil Grandhi (Jr.) defeating Bellbrooks Jackson Heinz (Sr.) and Wyatt Heinz (So.), 6-4, 6-2. Sycamore was the only school in the tournament to qualify two doubles teams. Bellbrook, which won a doubles state tennis title in 1977, finished fourth following a 2011 fourth place finish in Division II. Of note, all four teams that played in the Division I semifinals came from the Southwest district.

In the Division II singles bracket, Pepper Pike Oranges Maksim Kan (Jr.) rolled through his tournament trail and finished by defeating Cincinnati Country Days Patrick Wildman (So.), 6-1, 6-0, in the championship match. Kan won his first two matches 6-0, 6-0 before being challenged in his semifinal match (Asher Hirsch; Cincinnati Country Day), which he eventually won 6-2, 6-2. Wildman improved his overall finish in this years state tournament after a third place finish in 2011. In the consolation bracket, Hirsch defeated Bexley senior Matt Wareti, 6-3, 6-4.

The Division II doubles championship saw Gates Mills Hawkens Daniel Lubarsky (Sr.) and Siddarth Ahuja (So.) defeat Lima Central Catholics John Kidd (Sr.) and Alex Swick (Jr.), in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes. After dropping a heartbreaking 6-7 (7-9) set one, Hawken saw itself down 5-1 early in the second before coming back and claiming set two, 7-6 (7-3). They then took a commanding 5-2 lead in the third and were able to hold on by a final count of 7-5. It was the first state tennis title for Hawken and Lima Central Catholic finished as the Division II runner-up for the second consecutive year. In the consolation game, Gates Mills Gilmour Academys Mike Riley (Sr.) and Weston Noall (So.) defeated Toledo Maumee Valley Country Days Grant MacPherson (So.) and Stephen Shin (Sr.), 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
