2013 Girls State Tennis Recap
Division I
For the second consecutive year,
the OHSAA Girls Tennis State Tournament concluded inside at the Elysium
Tennis Center in Plain City, after inclement weather forced play
indoors.
The Division I singles state championship
featured the 2012 third-place finisher, Cincinnati Ursuline Academys
Mehvish Safdar, and Columbus Bishop Watterson senior, Lauren Ghidotti,
who was a member of the 2011 Division I doubles runner-up team. Safdar,
a senior, claimed the state championship, winning 6-1, 6-3. Safdars
victory gives Ursuline their second girls tennis singles championship.
In the consolation match, Dublin Jerome sophomore Eleanor Bullock
defeated Massillon Jackson junior Tessa Hill by a score of 7-6 (7-3),
6-0. It was Bullocks first appearance in the state tournament, while
Hill claims fourth place after qualifying for the state tournament in
2012.
The Division I doubles championship featured
pairs from two schools each seeking the first doubles championship in
their schools history. Anna and Alle Sanford from Olentangy Orange
defeated Alexa Abele and Maggie Skwara from Cincinnati Sycamore, 6-0,
6-2. In the consolation match, Pickerington Central pair Isis Thomas and
Kyah Thomas defeated Toledo Notre Dame Academys Alicia Nahhas and
junior Teagan McNamara, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
Division II
For the second consecutive year,
the OHSAA girls tennis state tournaments concluded inside at the Elysium
Tennis Center in Plain City, after inclement weather forced play
indoors.
The girls Division II singles championship
match featured two senior players who met in the second round of the
2012 state tournament. Last year, Ali Miller of Portsmouth beat Ariana
Iranpour of Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Miller
went on to finish fourth in the 2012 tournament. But today, it was
Iranpour who would win the matchup, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-2. With Iranpours
win, Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown claims their second singles state
championship in school history. In the consolation match, Cincinnati
Country Day junior Danielle Wolf placed third after coming away
victorious against Danielle Buchinsky of Shaker Heights Laurel, 6-3,
6-3. Both players were state qualifiers in 2012, and will look to return
to the state tournament in 2014.
The Division II Doubles Championship
featured pairs from Lexington and Pepper Pike Orange. Both pairs
showcased players returning to the state doubles tournament. Junior
Adrian Young returned for Pepper Pike Orange to the doubles tournament
after being a member of the 2011 third-place doubles team. In 2013, it
was Adrian Young and freshman Alissa Nakamoto capturing the schools
third doubles championship, 6-2, 6-4. Lexingtons senior Elise Betscher
and junior Jillian Earnest finish as 2013 runners-up after also
qualifying for the state tournament in 2012. The consolation match
featured pairs from Cincinnati Indian Hill and Kettering Archbishop
Alter. Indian Hill sophomores Meredith Breda and Caroline Andersen
finished third, winning 6-2, 6-4 against Alters Lauren Hawley and
Amanda Showalter, who finish fourth in their first state tournament
appearances.

2013 Girls State Tennis Preview
The OHSAA girls tennis state tournament returns to the OSU Outdoor
Varsity Tennis Courts and Hilliard Davidson High School this weekend,
where new state champions will be crowed in each of the four
tournaments. First and second round action will take place at OSU Friday
before shifting to Hilliard Davidson Saturday. The indoor location is
Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City. If play moves there Friday, parking
is only available at Sports Ohio/Chiller Dublin (7001 Dublin Park Drive,
Dublin, OH 43016).
In Division I singles, 2012 state champion Lauren Golick and runner-up
Sandy Niehaus were both seniors last year. That could open the door for
last years third-place finisher, Cincinnati Ursuline Academys Mehvish
Safdar and Kings Mills Kings Amina Ismail. The two seniors are on
opposite sides of the bracket and could meet in the finals.
In a wide-open Division I doubles tournament, the 2012 state champion
DiLorenzo sisters from New Albany Cristina and Francesca are not in
the field this year (Cristina was a senior last year), but the second,
third and fourth-place finishing tandems from last year are not back,
either. Mason and North Canton Hoover both have a pair of doubles teams
in the field.
In Division II singles, the top three placers from last year all
graduated, leaving Portsmouth senior Ali Miller as the top returner. She
finished fourth last year behind Rachael Morales (Columbus Bishop
Hartley), My Lihn Li (Columbus St. Francis DeSales) and Rachel Nelson
(Millersburg West Holmes). Joining the singles tournament this year is
Gahanna Columbus Academy junior Andrea Ballinger, who teamed with Hannah
Wexner to win the Div. II doubles title last year.
The Division II doubles duo of Meili Martin and Minda Martin from
Chesapeake form the highest-returning doubles tandem. They finished
fourth last year.
