State Volleyball Tournament Preview
COLUMBUS,
Ohio-- The 2011 OHSAA State Volleyball Tournament will be held
this weekend at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University in
Dayton. Semifinal matchups in Divisions III and II will be held Thursday
Nov. 10, while Division I and IV semifinals will take place Friday Nov.
11. Championship matches for all divisions will be played consecutively
Saturday Nov. 12, beginning with the Division III final at 11 a.m.,
followed by Division II, I and IV. Matches will not begin before 1 p.m.,
3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
The
Division I semifinal bracket pits 15th-ranked, first time state
qualifier Findlay (22-5) against second-ranked Cincinnati Mount Notre
Dame (22-5). Mount Notre Dame has won five state titles (06, 00, 99, 98,
95) and brought home runner-up trophies in 1990 and 2007. The second
semifinal game has top-ranked defending state champion Toledo St. Ursula
Academy (27-0) against 13th-ranked Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit (20-7).
St. Ursula Academy is the only returning state champion from the 2010
tournament while Walsh Jesuit will be making its third state appearance
and first since 2006.
The
Division II semifinals include sixth-ranked Columbus Bishop Hartley
(22-5) taking on unranked, 18-9 Cleveland Heights Beaumont School.
Bishop Hartley is back in the state tournament after consecutive state
appearances in 2007, 2008 and 2009 whereas Cleveland Heights Beaumont
School will be making its first state appearance after beating
14th-ranked Mentor Lake Catholic
27-25, 25-20, 25-27, 25-18 in the regional finals. The second semifinal
game has
2010
semifinalist and 12th-ranked Kettering Archbishop Alter (18-9) facing
off against second-ranked Mansfield Madison (26-2). Madison defeated
fifth-ranked Columbus St. Francis DeSales
25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 26-24 in the regional finals. The Knights of Alter
will be making their sixth state appearance and third in the last five
years.
The first
semifinal match of Division III features 2010 state semifinalist and
fifth-ranked Gates Milles Gilmour Academy (25-2) against eighth-ranked
Columbus Bishop Ready (22-5). Gilmour Academy is making its fourth state
appearance whereas Bishop Ready is making its first. The matchup on the
other side of the bracket has fourth-ranked Frankfort Adena (24-3)
against the top ranked team in the state, Casstown Miami East (27-1).
Adena took home the runner-up trophy in 2009 whereas Miami East is
making its first appearance.
Division
IV semifinal matchups will have 2010 semifinalist and 16th-ranked New
Philadelphia Tuscarawas Central Catholic (23-4) against sixth-ranked
Reedsville Eastern (27-0). Reedsville Eastern is one of two undefeated
team in this year�s state tournament (Toledo St. Ursula Academy). The second semifinal match has
14th-ranked Sycamore Mohawk (25-2) against top-ranked St. Henry (26-1).
This will be St. Henry�s 13th state appearance as they attempt to go for
the school�s seventh state title (04, 95, 94, 90, 87, 85). Mohawk is
making its first appearance.
