State Championship Games Recaps

GIRLS DIVISION II

Robinson Powers Cincinnati Mariemont to First OHSAA Girls Lacrosse State Championship

DELAWARE, Ohio — Cincinnati Mariemont senior midfielder Courtney Robinson scored six goals to propel the Warriors to a 13-10 win over Chagrin Falls in the 2018 OHSAA Division II girls lacrosse state championship game Saturday morning at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium.

Robinson set an OHSAA lacrosse state championship game record with her six scores, all of which came in the first half for Mariemont (17-4). She also had two assists.

Leading 9-8 at the half, the freshmen duo of Marah Campbell and Sophie Toman each scored two goals, finishing off the scoring for the Warriors and giving them their first OHSAA girls lacrosse state title. Senior Kyra George also finished with two goals and added an assist for Mariemont. Junior goaltender Frances Harrington had nine saves, tying an OHSAA girls lacrosse state championship game record.

Chagrin Falls (14-8) claimed a second-straight Division II state runner-up finish. Junior Kelly Wynveen paced the Tigers with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Mia Razavi finished with two goals and an assist.

BOYS DIVISION II

Trio of Hat Tricks Propels Columbus St. Francis DeSales to First OHSAA Boys Lacrosse State Title

DELAWARE, Ohio — Columbus St. Francis DeSales finished with three players with three goals, leading the Stallions to a 13-5 win over Toledo Ottawa Hills in the 2018 Division II boys lacrosse state championship game Saturday afternoon at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium.

Junior Carter Hilleary, junior Tommy Clayton and sophomore Mason Rickens each scored a hat trick for DeSales (19-3), all tying an OHSAA boys lacrosse state championship game record.

After trailing Ottawa Hills 3-2 after the first quarter, DeSales went on to outscore the Green Bears 9-2 the rest of the game. Along with the stellar offensive performances for DeSales, the Stallions defense held Ottawa Hills to well under its scoring average of 13 goals per game heading into the state final.

Senior Peter Boice led Ottawa Hills (20-2) with two goals. Junior Joe Boesel finished with a goal and an assist for the Green Bears.

GIRLS DIVISION I

Upper Arlington Uses Strong Second Half Effort to Cap Off Perfect Season and Repeat as OHSAA Division I Girls Lacrosse Champions

DELAWARE, Ohio — Upper Arlington doubled up New Albany in the second half to secure an 11-5 victory in the 2018 OHSAA Division I girls lacrosse state championship game Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium.

The win gave the Golden Bears a perfect 24-0 record for the 2018 campaign, becoming the first back-to-back state champion and first undefeated team in the two-year history of OHSAA boys and girls lacrosse.

Upper Arlington led 3-1 at halftime and went on to outscore New Albany 8-4 in the second half thanks in part to the Smith twins—Brooke and Brenna. They accounted for half of the Golden Bears’ second half scoring, with Brooke scoring three goals and Brenna adding another. Brooke finished the game with four goals and one assist. Seniors Megan Kozar and Lauren Farber each finished with two goals for the Golden Bears.

Junior Alyssa Kneedler led New Albany (21-2) in scoring with two goals, and senior goaltender Catherine Ryan tied an OHSAA girls lacrosse state championship game record with nine saves. New Albany’s only two losses of the season both came at the hands of Upper Arlington.

BOYS DIVISION I

Alf’s Late-Game Heroics Give Cincinnati St. Xavier First OHSAA Boys Lacrosse State Title

DELAWARE, Ohio — Senior Duke Alf’s goal with 1:46 remaining in the game broke a 9-9 tie and gave Cincinnati St. Xavier a 10-9 victory over Cleveland St. Ignatius in the 2018 OHSAA Division I boys lacrosse state championship game Saturday night at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium.

In a game that was close the entire way and packed with goal-scoring action, St. Ignatius and St. Xavier went to the fourth quarter tied at nine. The final stanza went scoreless for more than 10 minutes until Alf’s game-winner for the Bombers with less than two minutes remaining.

Alf and fellow senior Johnny Marrocco each finished with a hat trick for St. Xavier (19-3). Senior Jack Kilfoil added two goals for the Bombers.

St. Ignatius (16-8) claimed a second-straight OHSAA Division I state runner-up finish. Sophomores Michael Boehm and Merick Hartley each finished with a hat trick for the Wildcats.
