Hamilton Badin defeats
Gates Mills Hawken for Girls Division III Soccer Title
Rams Overcome Two-Goal Deficit, Win
Title In Penalty Kicks
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Hamilton Badin defeated Gates Mills Hawken 3-2 in penalty
kicks in the 2013 OHSAA girls Division III state soccer championship on
Friday at Crew Stadium in Columbus. Badin senior goalkeeper Michelle
Hessling saved a PK before stepping up to net a goal herself in the 4th
round of PKs. Hawken then missed its next shot, sealing the victory for the
Rams in the shootout (4-3).
Badin (15-4-4) put pressure on Hawken in the second half with seven of their
15 shots and three of their five shots on goal. Hawken had five corners
compared to Badin's two, but could not capitalize on the set pieces.
Hawken (16-2-5) was on the board first in the sixth minute of the first
half. Senior Kat Zalar scored on a penalty kick after being fouled in the
penalty box. Zalar added her second goal for the Lady Hawks in the 23rd
minute, putting Hawken up 2-0 at halftime. Badin rallied in the second half
with a goal in the 60th minute from Malia Berkely (assist by Morgan
Langhammer). Langhammer then scored in the 74th (assisted by Gabby Geigle)
to tie the game.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the overtime, but it would take a
penalty shootout to crown a champion. The first three shooters for each team
scored, but Badin would break the tie with a save and a goal in the 4th
round. Hawken missed its final shot.
This is Badin's eighth state appearance and second state title, its first
coming in 2005.
Hawken comes away as runner-ups for the first time in its first state final
appearance. The Hawks were a first-time state participant in 2012 (lost in
semi-final).
