GIRLS DIV. III - Cincinnati Summit
Country Day Runs Past Doylestown Chippewa, 6-0
COLUMBUS, Ohio
Cincinnati Summit Country Day claimed the 2015
Girls Soccer Division III State Championship in record-breaking fashion
Saturday, defeating Doylestown Chippewa 6-0 on a blustery but sunny day at
MAPFRE Stadium for Summit Country Days second state championship crown in
school history.
Summits Jess De Jesus got things started for the Silver Knights, tallying
the games first goal in the 24th minute. With De Jesus leading the way, it
didnt take long for Summits Addy Smythe to make an impact, scoring three
goals within seven minutes to take a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
With four first-half goals, Summit set a girls state championship record for
most goals in a half (4), topping their own previous record of three in the
second half of 2011s state championship game against Shaker Heights Laurel.
Smythes three-goal performance also set a girls state championship record
for most goals in a game by an individual player (3).
Doylestown Chippewa (19-2-1) capped off the game with four saves and one
shot on goal in what was its first Girls Soccer State Championship
appearance in school history.
GIRLS DIV. II - Akron Archbishop Hoban
rallies to win 2-1 OT vs. Granville
COLUMBUS, Ohio Goals in the 80th minute and
overtime propelled Akron Archbishop Hoban to a 2-1 overtime victory over
Granville in the 2015 OHSAA Division II girls soccer state championship
Friday at MAPFRE Stadium. The win earns Archbishop Hoban its first girls
soccer state title in its third appearance in a state championship.
Granville sophomore Rose Sawyers scored the first goal of the game in the
25th minute, assisted by senior Nikki Cox, giving the Blue Aces a 1-0 lead.
Granville maintained its lead late into the game thanks in part to five
saves by senior goalkeeper Tori Long. In the 80th minute, Archbishop Hoban
senior Alexandra Sheldon scored to tie the game at 1-1 and send it into
overtime. In the 13th minute of overtime, Archbishop Hoban sophomore Joanna
Elizabeth Gilbert scored the game-winning goal with an assist from Alexandra
Sheldon, earning the 2-1 win in overtime for Archbishop Hoban.
Archbishop Hoban finished as state runner-up in 2014. Granville finished as
state-runner up in 2013 and earns its second state-runner up in two
appearances in the state championship.
GIRLS DIV. I - Walsh Jesuit
Wins Record Fourth-Straight Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit defeated Loveland 1-0 in the
2015 OHSAA Division I Girls State Soccer Championship, completing another
undefeated championship season for the Warriors on Friday night at MAPFRE
Stadium.
With the victory, Walsh Jesuit (21-0-1) extended its impressive postseason
resume, winning the schools fourth-straight state championship and ninth
overall.
Bringing the pressure early in the first half, Walsh fired six shots while
conceding none. Loveland (18-4-1) stayed compact defensively, often placing
10 women behind the ball looking for counter attack opportunities.
Scoreless through a majority of the first half, Walsh broke through in the
32nd minute after a corner kick from Anna Rico found the head of Sofia
Rossi, who snapped it down and into the back of the net. Play leveled out in
the second-half with each team earning quality opportunities. When the final
whistle blew, it was Walsh sitting on top by a tally of 1-0.
Walsh has yet to lose in the finals of the state tournament, going a perfect
9-0. In addition, Walsh remains unbeaten in its last 91 matches, having not
lost a game since 2011.
BOYS DIV. I - St. Ignatius Takes Home
Seventh State Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio Cleveland St. Ignatius caps off
an unbeaten season by defeating Hilliard Davidson 4-0 to win the 2015 OHSAA
Boys Division I State Soccer Championship on a clear Saturday afternoon at
MAPFRE Stadium.
Conceding only 11 goals all season, St. Ignatius (22-0-1) established an
upbeat tempo from the start while managing to land six shots on frame in the
first half. Looking for its first state title since 2007, Davidson (18-2-3)
remained patient in looking for counter-attack opportunities, recording one
shot in the first half.
St. Ignatius Stephen Milhoan recorded the games first tally after
receiving a ball from Hayden Parente to place it near-post for the
game-winning goal. Going into the halftime break down 1-0, Davidson came out
in the second-half with quality opportunities, recording two shots on goal
with help from a strong supporting crowd at MAPFRE Stadium. In the end, St.
Ignatius defense held firm, while Parente, Riley Houde and Lawrence Karpeh
all managed to get on the score sheet before the final whistle.
With the victory, St. Ignatius records its second-consecutive championship
title and the schools seventh overall.
BOYS DIV. II -
Columbus St. Francis DeSales Wins
Second-Consecutive State Championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio Columbus St. Francis DeSales defeated Bay Village Bay 1-0
in the 2015 OHSAA Division II boys soccer state championship at MAPFRE
Stadium on Saturday. The game was a rematch of the 2014 Division II state
championship, in which DeSales was victorious over Bay, winning 1-0 in
overtime.
DeSales struck in the 37th minute, as sophomore midfielder Hector Gomez
found the back of the net on a left-footed shot, giving DeSales a 1-0 lead
that it would maintain to the final whistle.
Overall, DeSales finished with seven shots on goal and 13 shots overall. Bay
recorded three shots on goal and seven shots overall. DeSales senior
goalkeeper J.P. Baughman recorded three saves, as DeSales held Bay scoreless
for the second-consecutive year in the state championship.
The victory earns DeSales its second-consecutive boys soccer state
championship and its sixth state title overall. Bay was making its
second-consecutive appearance in the state championship. Bay has finished as
state runner-up four times in school history and has reached the state
semifinals four consecutive times.
BOYS DIV. III -
Cincinnati Summit Country Day Captures Fourth
State Championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio Cincinnati Summit Country Day won 9-0 over Canfield South
Range in the 2015 OHSAA Boys Division III Championship on Saturday night at
MAPFRE Stadium to claim the schools second state championship in three
years and fourth title overall.
In the 9-0 win, Summit set boys state championship record for most goals in
a single half (6) and most goals in a game (9).
With the Summit Country Day girls soccer team claiming the 2015 Division III
State Soccer Championship title the previous morning, Summit becomes only
the fourth school in OHSAA history to win both boys and girls soccer state
championships in the same season.
Summit Country Day (20-3) got off to a quick start after Summits Cameron
Belle flicked in a back-heel volley off a corner kick from teammate Diego
Vallota for the first goal of the night. First-half opportunities for Summit
continued to flourish after Belles opening tally, with contributions coming
from David Cook and Brendan Jones in the 27th and 34th minutes respectively.
Summit pressed on through the second half as Sam Martin, David Cook and Eli
Rawlings slotted home two goals each to tie a boys state championship record
across all divisions for most goals in a game by a single player (2).
Canfield South Range (18-4) managed four total shots in what was the
schools second state tournament appearance in as many years, while
goalkeeper Brant Rothbauer recorded five saves on the night.
