Gilmour Academy Takes Home First State Title
DAYTON, Ohio Third-ranked Gates Mills Gilmour Academy overcame a slow
start to top No. 1-ranked and previously undefeated St. Henry in five
sets (13-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-25, 15-7) Saturday in the Div. III state
championship match at Wright State Universitys Nutter Center.
The state title is the first for Gilmour (26-3), which had taken home
the runner-up trophy in its previous five appearances in the state
championship match (2008, 10, 11, 13 and 14). The Lancers 12 service
aces were a state tournament record for a five-set match. Gilmour was
led by senior Alexa Turk with 15 kills from 36 attacks, while sophomore
Ella Grbac had 12 kills in 34 attacks. Freshman Megan Brzozowski had 40
assists and sophomore Katie Forsythe had 18 digs.
St. Henry (28-1) was making its 14th appearance in the final four, which
is second all-time to Newark Catholics 19. St. Henry takes home its
11th state tournament trophy, including seven state titles and four
runner-ups.
St. Henry was led by junior Olivia Niekamp with 12 kills, senior Ellie
Stammen with 11 kills and senior Madison Broering with 39 assists.
Division II
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Makes it Back-to-Back Titles
DAYTON, Ohio Defending state
champion and second-ranked Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin shook off
a negative hitting percentage in the first set to win the next three
sets and the Div. II state championship Saturday over No. 3 Plain City
Jonathan Alder at Wright State Universitys Nutter Center.
NDCLs 3-1 win (14-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16) gives the Lions (25-3)
back-to-back state championships in the schools first two trips to the
state tournament. NDCLs hitting percentage went up each set and totaled
12.0 blocks.
NDCL was led by senior Ambre Pierce with 11 kills and seven assisted
blocks, while Erica Kostelac had 11 kills and 11 digs. Emily Wigand
provided 37 assists and Samantha Cooney had 16 digs.
Previously undefeated Jonathan Alder (28-1) was making its first trip to
the final four. The Pioneers were led by Karlee Reynolds and Alexa
Hasting with nine kills each. Natalie Regula posted 31 assists.
Division I
Mount Notre Dame Wins
Record Ninth State Championship
DAYTON, Ohio Cincinnati
Mount Notre Dame won its OHSAA-record ninth state volleyball championship
Saturday, muscling its way past Dublin Coffman 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) in
the Division I state final at Wright State Universitys Nutter Center.
MND, which has now won the
last three Div. I titles, had been tied with Cincinnati St. Ursula and
Newark Catholic with eight titles. The Cougars have won championships in
2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2006, 2000, 1999, 1998 and 1995.
Third-ranked MND (23-6)
hit .204 in the match, but its .435 hitting percentage in the third set
overpowered top-ranked Coffman (26-3).
The Cougars were led by
seniors Sydney Mukes with 13 kills in 45 attacks, while senior Dani
Szczepanski had 13 kills in 28 attacks. Senior Cara Smith added 28 assists.
Coffman was led by senior
Alli Sabol with 15 kills, while Hunter Atherton posted 34 assists.
Division IV
Jackson Center Shuts Out Tuscarawas Central Catholic for First Title
DAYTON, Ohio Second-ranked Jackson Center
set a Div. IV state tournament record for hitting percentage in a
three-set match, helping the Tigers overpower New Philadelphia
Tuscarawas Central Catholic 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-9) Saturday in the
Div. IV state championship at Wright State Universitys Nutter Center.
It marks the first volleyball state championship for Jackson Center
(26-1). The Tigers were making their third trip to the final four
(runner-up in 2008).
In 88 attempts, Jackson Center posted 44 kills and just nine errors for
a .398 hitting percentage, topping the previous three-set state record
of .327 set by Sidney Lehman Catholic in 2005. The Tigers forced TCC
into 22 attack errors in 88 attempts and allowed just 21 kills, equating
to a -.011 hitting percentage.
Jackson Center was led by junior Cassie Meyer with 21 kills, which sets
a state tournament record in a three-set match (previous record was 18
by four players). Junior Kameron Eichert had 19 assists, senior Jayel
Frye had 13 assists and senior Peyton Esser had 13 digs.
TCC was led by sophomore Alexis Gilland with nine kills and eight digs.

2015 Volleyball State Tournament
Preview
For the 41st year, the Ohio High School
Athletic Association volleyball state tournament takes center stage this
week, and for the 26th year it will be held at the Ervin J. Nutter Center on
the campus of Wright State University in Dayton. The divisional rotation
this year is III, II, I and IV. The championship games will be televised by
SportsTime Ohio.
The state tournament begins on Thursday at
noon with the Div. III semifinals. Ninth-ranked Zoarville Tuscarawas Valley
(22-4) takes on No. 1 ranked and undefeated St. Henry (27-0). TV is in the
state tournament for the seventh time (first since 2010), while St. Henry is
making its 14th final four appearance, which is second all-time only to
Newark Catholics 19 trips, and owns seven state titles (also second
all-time). Then No. 17 Casstown Miami East (23-4) faces third-ranked Gates
Mills Gilmour Academy (24-3). The two previous times Miami East advanced to
the state tournament, they won it all (2011, 2012), while Gilmour has been
to the Nutter Center seven times and has taken home five state runner-up
trophies.
The Div. II semifinals then take the court
on Thursday, beginning when second-ranked Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin
(23-3) faces #14 Lexington (24-4). Last year, NDCL won a state championship
in its first trip to the final four, while Lexington will try to accomplish
that same feat this year in its first trip to state tournament. A battle of
top-five ranked teams then wraps up play on Thursday when No. 4 Middletown
Bishop Fenwick (23-4) takes on No. 3 Plain City Jonathan Alder (27-0).
Fenwick won a state title in 2010, while Alder won its first regional
championship in school history last weekend.
Four more semifinal matches will be
contested on Friday, beginning with Div. I at noon when fourth-ranked
Massillon Jackson (27-1) meets top-ranked Dublin Coffman (25-2). Jackson has
been the state runner-up two of the last three years (2012 and 2014), while
Coffman was the state runner-up back-to-back years just before that (2009
and 2010). Then in a rematch of a state semifinal match last year, No. 2
Toledo St. Ursula Academy (25-2) then faces defending state champion and No.
3 Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame (21-6) at 2 p.m. MND won last year 3-1.
The Division IV semifinals begin at 4 p.m.
Friday as first-time state qualifier and third-ranked Monroeville (26-1)
faces No. 2 Jackson Center (27-1). Both these teams had thrilling regional
championship matches, as Monroeville beat defending state runner-up McComb
(in five sets) and Jackson Center, back at state for the third time, beat
defending state champion Fort Loramie (3-0). Then unranked New Philadelphia
Tuscarawas Central Catholic (23-5) takes on unranked Waterford (21-6) at 6
p.m. TCC is at state for the seventh time, while Waterford is making its
first trip.
