New Champions Across the Board
The 86th annual boys and 19th annual girls Division I golf state
championship action returns to The Ohio State University Golf Club in
Columbus, October 21 and 22. Overall, 144 golfers will compete in the
36-hole tournament spanning two days. The boys will take on the Scarlet
Course (Par 71, 7,043 yards), while the girls will play the Gray Course
(Par 70, 5,560 yards).
In the boys tournament a new team champion will be crowned after
back-to-back winner Columbus St. Charles failed to qualify in 2011.
Centerville, Dublin Jerome, Fremont Ross and Stow-Munroe Falls won their
respective district titles to advance to Columbus.
Individually, Cleveland St. Ignatius senior Beau Titsworth returns to
see if he can improve upon his runner-up finish from 2010. That will be
no easy task, as Wildcat senior teammate Matt Gerard (T-7, 2010), St.
Charles senior Nate Yankovich (T-10, 2010) and a field of competitors
also seek to claim medalist honors.
For the first time in three years a new girls team champion will be
awarded on Saturday afternoon. Mason failed to qualify for the state
tournament for the first time since 2006, after winning the past three
championships. Looking to take advantage will be district winners
Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, Dublin Jerome, 2010 runner-up Massillon
Jackson and Toledo St. Ursula Academy.
Medina Highland junior Jessica Porvasnik is the leading candidate for
medalist honors after a runner-up finish in 2010 and shooting a 68 at
districts. Other top finishers from 2010 that have made it back to the
Gray Course are Highland teammate senior Stephanie Horvath (T-13th) and
Ursuline senior Megan Tenhundfeld (T-11).
