State Tournament Recaps

Division I
Elyria Wins Third State Title, Tops Lebanon

AKRON, Ohio – With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Elyria scored two unearned runs on the same play to walk off with a 4-3 win over No. 1 ranked Lebanon in the OHSAA Division I softball state championship game Saturday at Firestone Stadium.

In its 12th trip to the state tournament, 10th-ranked Elyria (22-4) takes home its third crown (2009, 2002), while Lebanon (30-4) is the state runner-up for the third time.

In the seventh inning, Elyria junior April Howser singled and junior Macy Taylor walked to put runners at first and second base. Both baserunners then scored when senior Madison Cruzado’s grounder was misplayed by Lebanon, allowing Howser to score from second, and then Taylor scored from first when the Lebanon defense obstructed her path to the plate after she rounded third base.

Howser had three of Elyria’s five hits, including a double, and scored twice. Freshman pitcher Isabella St. Peter went the distance for the Pioneers, striking out a pair and scattering eight hits.

Lebanon was led by senior Chloe Allen with three hits and a run scored. Junior Madison DeGennaro added two hits.

Division IV
Williamsburg Wins School’s First Team State Championship

AKRON, Ohio – Williamsburg scored three runs in the final three innings to a earn a 3-2 win over Danville Saturday in the Division IV state championship game at Firestone Stadium. After making the school’s first softball state tournament last year, the win gives Williamsburg its first team state championship in any sport.

Ranked sixth, Williamsburg (29-2) trailed 2-0 after four innings before junior Carly Wagers delivered a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game. Wagers then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning when she walked and scored from second base on a two-out single by senior Kacey Smith.

Also Williamsburg’s pitcher, Wagers did not give up an earned run and allowed only two Danville base hits, while striking out 11 and walking three.

Making its second appearance in the state championship game (title in 2008), second-ranked Danville (29-3) was led by sophomore McKinley Alberts, who had both of the Blue Devils’ hits. Senior pitcher Shanna Mickley allowed only three hits and struck out seven.

Division III
Warren Champion Tops Wheelersburg for Seventh Championship

AKRON, Ohio – Second-ranked Warren Champion won its seventh softball state championship with a 5-1 win over defending state champion and No. 1 ranked Wheelersburg Saturday at Firestone Stadium.

Making its ninth appearance in the state tournament, Champion joins only four other schools in OHSAA history with seven or more softball state championships (Akron Springfield owns the record with nine).

In the postgame trophy presentation, the Golden Flashes were joined on the field by the school’s baseball team, which won the Division III baseball state championship earlier in the day in Columbus. Champion is the second school in OHSAA history to win softball and baseball state championships in the same season (Walsh Jesuit in 2004).

Senior McKenzie Zigmont led the Flashes with three hits and also threw a complete-game four-hitter in the pitching circle, with six strikeouts. Champion collected 11 hits in the game, including two each from sophomore Carli Swipas and junior Alayna Fell. Swipas and sophomore Abbi White both drove in two runs.

Wheelersburg senior pitcher Faith Howard went the distance for the Pirates, striking out four. Junior Taylor Fannin had two hits and senior Breanna Klaiber tripled. Entering the championship game, Wheelersburg (25-3) had only allowed one run in the tournament, that coming in a 10-1 state semifinal win. Champion allowed only two total runs in the postseason.

Division II
Hebron Lakewood Takes Home Fifth Title with 2-1 Win Over Archbishop Hoban

AKRON, Ohio – Earning the school’s fifth softball state title – all coming since 2008 – Hebron Lakewood topped Akron Archbishop Hoban, 2-1, Saturday in the Division II championship game at Firestone Stadium.

The No. 1-ranked Lancers (32-1) also won titles in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2016. They have been state champion or runner-up all seven times they have reached the Final Four.

Lakewood got both its runs in the third inning on a two-run home run by senior Brenna Brownfield. Earlier in the inning, senior Alexa Perry tripled. Perry and Brownfield both had two hits in the game, while in the circle, senior Courtney Vierstra struck out seven, walked none, and scattered four hits.

Fourth-ranked Hoban (24-3) was making its 10th appearance in the state tournament and adds the state runner-up trophy to its collection of six softball state championships. Junior Chloe Weidrick drove in the Knights’ lone run with a single in the fourth inning and senior Laney Jones struck out five and walked only one in the circle.
