Dover Wins First State Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dover took home its school’s first state golf title, besting runner-up Cortland Lakeview by nine strokes, with a two-day score of 331-336-667 at the 2014 OHSAA girls Division II state golf tournament on the Gray Course (Par 70, 5,560 yards) at The Ohio State University Golf Club.

Dover led Lakeview by nine shots after the first day and the Tornados were able to hold off the runner-up Bulldogs (340-336-676). Dover was led by junior Katlyn Shutt (73-75-148). Dover was the 2013 runner-up to Gates Mills Hawken.

Dover and Cortland Lakeview were making their second appearance in the state tournament after participating for the first time in 2013. Lakeview finished seventh in 2013.

Leavittsburg LaBrae senior Haylee Harford won medalist honors with an impressive 68-73-141. Harford is used to the pressure, having won medalist honors in 2011 when she attended Warren John F. Kennedy.

It was an extremely close competition among the top three individuals. Tied after day one with Harford, Shelby sophomore Alexis Jones shot a 74 on day two and finished one stroke behind. 2013 medalist Makayla Dull, a senior from Kansas Lakota, finished three strokes behind the leader (72-72-144).

Harford’s and Jones’ day one 68 set a new low-round record on the Gray Course for Division II that was previously held by Ariel Witmer from North Lima South Range in 2008 (69). The 68 also tied the low-round record across all divisions. In Division I, Jessica Porvasnik from Medina Highland shot a 68 in 2012.

Harford becomes the fourth two-time medalist in girls golf state championship history.
